Title: Signup thread for beta (any wave, not specifically the next one)
Post by: x4000 on April 16, 2015, 09:47:45 AM
If you asked to be in the beta in another thread and I haven't answered, I WILL eventually get to that.  Please see The official "urgent things to tell Chris" thread (http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,17301.0.html) for an explanation of my process on ignoring the forums and then binge-ing on them, and why I have to do that (you guys outnumber me hundreds to one if not more).  If you're worried that I missed you, or if you just want to post in a centralized place, then please go ahead and post your interest here in this thread!

If you're urgently wanting to be added for whatever reason, and don't want to be part of the regular waves later on for some reason, then please post in the urgent things thread.  I'd prefer that people go with the waves approach for the most part, but if you have serious ants in your pants or you have a scheduling issue or whatever (you're available this week, then busy for the next few weeks, etc, etc), then by all means let me know.

UPDATE 9/24:
YES I still want new testers, and no you are not too late.  If you are reading this sometime in the first half of October, no you are not too late.  Welcome in!

We've undertaken an absolutely massive reworking of a lot of the game after the last few waves of players, and are ramping back up heavily now.  I'm going to be doing waves every half week or so between now and release, probably with 6-20 people per wave (that's a big range, I know, but it will partly depend on how much was just released prior to a wave, and how many people sign up for a specific wave).

We're looking at an October 20-somethingth release hopefully, and new folks are still signing up for testing all the time (and VERY welcome to do so in this very thread), so half-weekly waves are pretty well unavoidable if I still want to have people in waves (which I do want) and not have a bunch of people who volunteered miss out on the beta (which I don't want).  We certainly can use every pair of eyes we can get, and every configuration of computer, and every style of thinking, every mix of past gaming experience, and so on.

I'm setting up a signup thread with a shirt color for each week, so feel free to sign up there if you want to be in the current week's group.  If we wind up with too many volunteers for a given week, then I'll either pick randomly from that list and then roll the extras over to the next week, or else I'll just do a larger wave that week, at my discretion based on what I think is best for the game based on its current state.  Nothing personal either direction on that, and if you get pushed back one week I'll make extra sure you are in the next week.

If there are not enough volunteers (plenty of people have a "whenever you need me" attitude, which I really appreciate as much as I appreciate volunteers), then I'll pull from the non-ordered group.  I try to pull evenly from people who asked to be in the beta earlier this year, who asked to be in more recently, who I know from past betas, who I've never met before, who sound excited, who sound calm, etc.  I like to have a good mix of types of personalities and playstyles and so on in each version.

If for some reason you have specific scheduling constraints and you need to be in this week (or sooner even) if you're to take part, then just let me know (you can PM me to make sure I don't miss it) and I'll get you in sooner.  I'd rather have folks like that outside of a normal wave than miss their input all together.

If I miss adding you to a wave after saying I would add you, then that was totally my bad and an oversight and please send me a PM to make sure that I get that corrected and get you in there.  I already did it to one guy by accident, and I'm really glad that he spoke up to let me know!  It's not a bother or a hassle for me, and goodness nobody is annoying me.

Thanks everybody!

I forget if I'm in or not, but consider this my hat-toss into the ring! Put me in whatever wave you like!

I've got an 8 month old who is crawling everywhere and starting to stand on her own, so I'm not an amazing tester who can sit still for five minutes, but I can't help it, Arcen makes games that are just too interesting not to play.

Would not a "Apply for Beta" topic make your job easier?

Maybe there is one, but I could not find it so far.

I am interested in helping test. I haven't been following the development of the game closely, if that helps you locate me in a wave at all. I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised! :)

I've been hemming and hawing and have decided that I would like to be part of the testing beta, and that I should be able to make time to genuinely participate.

I expect to be busy from June, and then horribly busy from July, so for me, earlier is better.  Then again, predictions of future workloads are not super reliable in my work.

I'll toss my hat in to offer to test the beta . .mostly did testing with Arcen before with the early stages of AVWW 1, since we're all posting credentials on this.  I've been following Stars Beyond Reach a bit, though certainly haven't read everything, so I suppose I'd be more of a "interested person that doesn't know too much yet" sort of impression/ responses.  Still, if that helps, I would be happy to test things out.

Man, i really dig all the games made by arcen, they're really good games, except for AVWW, it couldn't match the same quality as the rest of arcen's games :(, hopefully its not too late for me to join in the arcen does alpha centauri beta test train, for i want to hop in and see if the future will continue to awe me.

anyhow, count me in for testing.

Anyway, count me in for the beta, any wave/shirt color/ is fine!

Of course I would see this topic after I finished posting in the "Beta Begins" news post's topic. I'd like to help out with the testing in whatever wave you'd have me. I've got a good bit of spare time since exams ended.

Sign me up to help out in whatever wave you think would be best.  I've given a lot of critical and technical feedback in the past, starting with Light of the Spire, through the Valley Games, and TLF.  Whether that sort of feedback is better at the beginning of the beta cycle or the end I don't really know, but I'm up for another go whenever it's best.

I would love to help out if possible.

To get most out of my time I do have some suggested dates(As I have some time off :P )

This weekend(+Monday and tuesday)
Next weekend(+Monday and teusday).
After that I am pretty much bound to regular work times but nothing too hectic, I will probably move testing to the weekend to keep my sanity ;)

What can you expect from me
- At the very least I will make one large post with the initial findings, Where I get stuck, what confuses me and what I like. Please note that I can only document things this way for a couple of hours as I will be learning
- I will give feedback on the go and participate in discussions based of my knowledge
- I will report bugs I find to mantis
- I will obviously read the sticky post that all beta testers should read just before starting - I intentionally did not read it yet considering I want to have what is in there fresh on my mind before the test :p

What not expect from me
- My time is a bit limited so I can't be a fully fledged QA. Even though my background allows troubleshooting(It is my job, not in games but hey :P Troubleshouting is troubleshooting.
- I will intentionally not read any topics in this forum except this one to not alter my initial feedback(I want to start as fresh as possible ^^), I am however subscribed to the rss feed for quite some time and have been lurking it. This might have clouded some judgement.

Why such a long post?
I simply believe that this is not a marketing kind of beta and is based on criticism so I want you to know what I can and can't offer before being accepted into the beta - I prefer that the right people are picked for the right tasks :)

Does the beta include Linux support? If so, I would gladly help out spotting and reporting bugs. Especially technical and Linux related things.

By the way, big thanks for your general Linux support and for publishing your games DRM-free on gog.com :)

If there is still places, I would like to participate to the beta !

I'm following this project with high interest and watch regularly to see the news since I loved AI War and Bionic Dues, and I played a little Last Federation and it is really interesting. In the last update of the site, you say that you would like to have even more beta-testers, so... I was hesitating to be volunteer in the beginning of the project (I never participated to a beta) but if you need more people and want another beta-tester, I'm here :)

I'd like to try and beta test this as well! I like 4x games a lot but I can be kinda picky with them, if I get in I probably won't be able to hardcore play it due to life, but I'd give feedback when possible.

Note: Keep in mind I'm somewhat of a casual gamer (depends on the game/mood) so my feedback would most likely come from that perspective.

Following tradition, I want to be the last wave of beta testers so I can examine if things "make sense" for someone who has not followed things before the release. I will attempt to provide perspective for someone familiar with the genre but has little idea about the specific game, and giving "roadblocks" that would stop me from playing if I was not actively beta testing.
Title: Re: Signup thread for beta (any wave, not specifically the next one)
Post by: x4000 on April 30, 2015, 01:11:18 PM
Sorry for my super slow responses!  I've been so sucked in with the first wave of testers that I've not had time to do much else.  With the release date pushed back to allow for more refinement, I'm also taking the waves of testers a bit slower, at least particularly at first, so that the biggest issues of each "wave" get resolved prior to the next wave coming in.  With this first wave of redshirts, of course that list of issues is... well, pretty massive, given the scale of the game.  But that list is getting smaller by the day, and we're hitting a point where new testers will be useful within the next week.

The really gratifying thing for me has been seeing that despite all of the expected carnage of confusion and bugs for the redshirts, that they were still really enjoying it / hypnotized by it.  So that's a really exciting thing for me personally, because it speaks to what the game will hopefully be for people once it's actually properly fully polished!

As noted in another thread: I think what I'm going to do is start an "orange shirt" group to come between the redshirts and the blueshirts, on reflection.  The redshirt period has been a lot longer than I expected, and a lot rougher on that group.  I still haven't had time to focus on proper documentation for what the blueshirt experience is supposed to be.  So I think I'll add this orange shirt level that is basically "redshirts round 2, but this time with way more balance and way fewer bugs compared to before."  And anyone who was previously marked as a blueshirt and wants to become an orangeshirt can do so.  I'll make another thread about that.

Amazingly you were not on the list!  I've added you now, and put you in the general after-blueshirts category.  Gosh it's been 8 months already, I remember when she was just "coming soon."  This past 8 months has been a lot longer for you than me, I suspect. ;)  Time starts passing a lot quicker again once they pass a year.  And then suddenly it's TOO fast.

Would not a "Apply for Beta" topic make your job easier?

Maybe there is one, but I could not find it so far.

Yeah, if I had sense I'd definitely do that. ;)  I'll do that shortly.  You're in from another thread, by the way.

I am interested in helping test. I haven't been following the development of the game closely, if that helps you locate me in a wave at all. I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised! :)

Always good to see returning folks.  I've got you marked down on the list!

I always love hearing about you guys' past experiences, because honestly things blur together and while I recognize heavy contributors and even light ones, I couldn't swear which games people were active with, etc.  But folks really don't have to sell me with credentials or anything of the sort. ;)

I've got you added to the list -- I'll probably keep you to a very late wave if that's okay with you, because I could use some good folks in those waves that are coming in as blind as possible.  It definitely is a good test for release candidates, if that makes sense.

Sounds good!  And yes, I remember your style vividly. ;)  You're extremely useful as a tester, but I think I'd like to have folks like you, Cyborg, and chemical_art in waves where things are a little bit more mature.  Otherwise you'll get frustrated.  But I have you marked down, as -- like the other two -- you guys are absolutely positively invaluable.  Thanks for signing up!

I'm hyped... so count me in :)) Looking forward to play another awesome game from you guys.
I can obviously wait till July to buy it, but if given the chance I'm willing to play as soon as possible

Looks like a great game.  I'd be willing to give it an early look if you need me.  Otherwise, I'll look forward to buying it on release.

Added you to the list!

And yes, definitely still looking for testers.  In my view we can't really have too many.  I think for TLF we had about 150, but then person 10,000 after the game comes out finds something critical that all of the rest of us missed, heh.  I'm trying to take this in waves so that too many people don't get too hung up on one specific set of issues (and instead the later groups see whatever new issues are there with fresh eyes), so hence the slower waves.  But I still am looking for tons of folks.

Sign me up. I'd love to get into as soon as I can, but I'll take whatever shirt you give me. Love AI War and Bionic dues.

Thanks!  And welcome to the forums.  Added you to the list as an orangeshirt!

I would really like to be part of this beta. I've been pondering about this since your very first post mentioning the beta... That would be my first participation in an Arcen beta, but I'm really excited about Stars Beyond Reach and would love to help testing it.

I heard about this game through eXplorminate, and it sounds amazing!  I was just involved in a beta test, and it really whetted my appetite.  I'd love to be a blueshirt/everyone else - whatever you need.

Cheers, and welcome!  I've marked you as a blueshirt.

I would love to help out if possible.

...

Why such a long post?
I simply believe that this is not a marketing kind of beta and is based on criticism so I want you to know what I can and can't offer before being accepted into the beta - I prefer that the right people are picked for the right tasks :)

Awesome, thanks so much for the post and the offer.  Based on your comments... how about I put you in a wave in late May?  That would give you a month between then and launch (since that was pushed back to July), so you wouldn't be too crunched to just a week or so.  And the game would be in a more mature state with hopefully reasonably-robust documentation, etc, so your particular brand of testing will be more useful.  I fear that bringing you in too early would lead to a lot of the sort of writing-up-of-stuff that wouldn't be as productive, but where later on you'd be solid gold.  Once the game hits a certain point of maturity, that sort of first-experiences stuff is just what I need.  Would that work from your end?

I'd love to help iron out the bugs/balance issues with SBR before release. I'll be out of the country for the first couple weeks of May but I'll be available any time after that.  :)

Sounds great!  I've got you added down with a note to make sure you're in a wave in mid-May or after.  If I happen to send you a build before you're back and ready, don't feel pressure to test right away or anything.  It will keep, and so give it until you actually have time you're comfortable with spending on it.  Release is now early July, so we're good.  Thanks!

Does the beta include Linux support? If so, I would gladly help out spotting and reporting bugs. Especially technical and Linux related things.

By the way, big thanks for your general Linux support and for publishing your games DRM-free on gog.com :)

Welcome!  And yep, the beta is already linux, osx, and windows -- we always put out all three at the same time.  To some extent our ability to fix things on certain platforms is limited since it's all about the unity 3d engine usually.  But that said, there are some gotchas on occasion that affect only one platform that we've had to work around.  I think we might have some testers on linux already, I'm not sure -- but more are always really desirable spread across all the platforms.

And it's my pleasure on the linux support and the DRM-free GOG builds!  Even our steam builds are DRM-free, by the way -- you can take the game's folder out of the steam folder and just move it onto another computer or a thumb drive or whatever, and it will continue to function.  You can also still get updates via the in-game updater at that point, too.  Although during beta it's just a steam updater, steam-only build -- keeps our bandwidth costs down during this period of rapid iteration, and makes things slightly faster for us, too.  But shortly before launch we'll switch on the non-steam updater as well and make sure that works well before we release on GOG, etc. :)

I would really like to participate in the beta sir, and I will do my best reporting any and all bugs as well.

Welcome!  And I've added you to the list. :)

I would love the opportunity to test and report my findings :) either way ill be grabbing the game on release! XD

I've had you on the list since January 18th, so you're all set!

I volunteer! Put me behind those blue shirt guys please, as I don't want to clamber over too many bodies. :P

You're on the list!  And after the blueshirts it is. :)

Welcome!  And thanks for the kind words. :)  I have you added down as a post-blueshirt!

I would like to participate if there is still places.

Indeed there are, and I have you added to the list!  Welcome also. :)

Think I'm already on some sort of list somewhere, but I'd be fine wearing a fairly blue shirt on this one.  If not, please add me to some sort of list :)

Yep, I've had you on there since January 29th.  I've updated you to a blueshirt now, though. :)

Please put me on the beta tester list.  I'm on an Early 2009 iMac, if that matters.

Added you!  Welcome to the forums.  Thanks for posting your specs, that should be a useful test rig.

Please add me to the list of people to beta test this thing.

TV is winding down and gaming is winding up!

Added you!

Sign me up! I hope being a first-time poster (but long-time player of Arcen games) is not a problem.

Are you kidding?  I don't care if you never heard about Arcen until the day you asked to be a part of the beta.  I have the very opposite of a problem with new people. :)

Anyway, I've added you to the list -- and welcome, by the way.  If you have a shirt color preference, let me know!

I'd love to be in for whatever wave of testers. I've been looking around for something new and interesting lately whenever Monster Hunter hasn't devoured my attention.

Added you to the list!

Picky?  Yes please!  Kind of casual?  Also very useful!  I'm going to keep you to a later wave if you don't mind, sometime in mid or late May.  I think that will make the best use out of your nature, if that works for your schedule.  Thanks!

I wrote in another thread, but for simplicity's sake, I think it's better if everything is centralised.

So if you'd want me I'd like to be in the beta, as necessary.

Gotcha on the list, thanks! :)

I'm really excited about this, 4x is my all time fav genre and Arcen one of my fav Devs. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
Count me in for the Beta

Sweet!  Thanks for the kind words.  Added you to the list!

I'd love to beta test Stars Beyond Reach! Either as a blueshirt or as "other guys". I've actually been following Arcen since AI War was released and enjoy every single one of your games, just lurked on the forums :P

Sounds great!  And yep, there are tons of places I've just been a lurker, too.  I've added you as a post-blueshirt for now, but if you change your mind just let me know.  Thanks!

I am a huge fan of AI War and have spent nearly 400 hours playing it. Also, I am a big fan of Arcen Games approach to game design and I would really like the opportunity to help test out and possibly contribute positively toward Stars Beyond Reach.

Whew, I'm always so honored when I see people with that many hours in one of our games (almost always AI War).  That's just so cool to me, on a personal level, so thanks for sharing. :)  I've got you added to the list!  Right now in the main mix, but did you want a shirt color?

Following tradition, I want to be the last wave of beta testers so I can examine if things "make sense" for someone who has not followed things before the release. I will attempt to provide perspective for someone familiar with the genre but has little idea about the specific game, and giving "roadblocks" that would stop me from playing if I was not actively beta testing.

Oh yes, I've had you on the list for the last wave since February 28th, looks like.  And I actually like your "I play until I would normally stop" approach so well that I adopted that in my own pre-beta testing, incidentally.  It led to 300+ unfinished games for me, but it really let me perfect the early game.  It's left the midgame and the late game in need of a lot of refinement, but that early game is just so important.

Anyway, I still have you on there!

Sounds good!  I'll probably keep you in the shortly-post-blueshirt period, then, as that seems to be a solid area where I can use people right now. :)

Hey, a freshly registered account here. I am interested in testing the game. Blue group would be better for me as I am busy with finishing my school atm so I cannot delve really deep into it.

Added you to the list as a blueshirt for now!  If you'd rather be post-blueshirt, I don't know if that would fit better as an experience for you with being busy with school, etc.

Great, looking forward to it.

Great, looking forward to it.

Thanks again. :)

When are the beta keys going out? i really can't wait to start, its looking quite good right.

It depends on what wave people are in.  I'm trying to do a group a week or thereabouts, restarting that process tomorrow after two weeks with just the redshirts.  The early phases are the ones that are just riddled with bugs and other issues that will suck the life out of you if you don't enjoy that sort of process (whereas some folks just absolutely thrive on that and enjoy nothing more than getting their elbows in the muck at that stage of the game).

Right now the plan is for keys to go out to a new wave of "orangeshirts" tomorrow, which will be a cross between redshirts and blueshirts.  Basically, it's still going to be a mess for the orangeshirts to some extent -- some mechanics are broken, some unbalanced, a lot undocumented.  It's still bloody fun in the opinion of the redshirts who have chimed in, thankfully, but it's definitely not a 1.0 game or anything. ;)

For the blueshirts, ideally the worst of that will be cleaned up and things better documented.  They will be in another week most likely, unless the orangeshirt phase takes two weeks rather than one, in which case I guess we'll add in "yellowshirts" prior to the blueshirts, haha.  Anyone can change shirt color as they desire, it's up to them, but blueshirt is supposed to represent a certain amount of stability and documentation, so I'm not going to call that color until we hit there.  One or two more weeks should do it, but I don't know which yet because I don't know what these orangeshirts are going to find (and what the redshirts will continue to find).

Beyond the blueshirts, right now it's pretty unorganized as to who is in what week except for a few people who have specifically requested to be in the very late release-candidate stages, or who I think would be the most help there based on their self descriptions.  For everyone else I'll try and make a mix of people I know and people I don't know in each week, to keep the perspectives varied.  But if someone has time concerns (busy later, free now, etc) or just can't hold their horses and is okay with the state of the game as it is at a given time, I'll be happy to send a key earlier.

In your particular case, I don't currently have you marked down as any color shirt, so you're in basically the period from mid-May through late May, most likely.  If you'd like to be in tomorrow's group of orangeshirts, or in the group next week if that sounds better, then just let me know!

Any shirt color if fine with me. As a 35 year old PC gamer I have had the opportunity to test quite a few games at various levels of development. I understand the process and don't mind toughing it out through the rough early stages.

Hi Chris,

That will work, I have a lot of time off schedule for june(Actually the half of my work month is still pending approval - Time off is one of the great perks of my job :) ). I will try to help where I can :) For now I should try to keep away for as much information as possible to keep my feedback fresh ^^

I think I'll sign up as well. I have got free time for the rest of the week, but not on the weekend. After that I should have enough time all week (without any unforeseen circumstances happening). So any color/wave you want to assign me to is fine by me.

I don't know how much of a problem my compulsive must-read-every-post-so-far behaviour is for my first impression, though. If it's a problem, just tell me to stop reading SBR posts and/or put me in on a later date or not at all. Whichever you think is best :)

Oh, I can also test SBR on my Linux machine, if that's any help (got to install Steam, but that should work, I hope...Is it possible (i.e. allowed) to use one Steam account on two systems?)

It's all good, having some people who are reading compulsively is not a problem at all.  It takes all kinds, as they say.  Some people abstain completely, some binge, some read bits and pieces, and that's fine with me.  Given what you've said, and looking at my current roster of folks, I'd like to add you in one of the waves after the blueshirts if that's okay with you.  Since your enthusiasm is high, and your knowledge, it feels right to me to put you into one of the later waves.  That would still give you a month, month and a half of time to be in there prior to release, so you'd definitely still be making an impact!

Oh, I can also test SBR on my Linux machine, if that's any help (got to install Steam, but that should work, I hope...Is it possible (i.e. allowed) to use one Steam account on two systems?)

Sweet, sounds good!  We have a variety of folks on linux, but more is always good.  You are absolutely allowed to install steam on as many machines as you want, but only one can be logged in at a given time to your account.  Personally I have my steam account on three different machines (one a virtualized linux box on my mac), and the only thing that happens is when you log in with one machine, it tends to kick you on the others.  I think?  I may be remembering too far back.  Anyway, it won't let you play a given game on more than one machine on the same account at once, and that's the only real caveat.  But Valve are really big on letting you play on whatever machines you want to, which is part of the deal with their "cloud saves" stuff, which lets your settings and savegames transfer from one machine to another.  Pretty handy!

What you can do and is a bit simpler is give yourself rights to access your account from another account.

http://store.steampowered.com/promotion/familysharing

That way I can play all my games on my wife's computer and she can play on mine. Saves and achievements are not transferred, but I think it's a good point actually. If you do that you can be logged at both place, but the "shared" account is kicked five minutes after the "main" account starts playing something.

Ok, thanks! After the blueshirts sounds fine :) And thanks for the info about using Steam on two systems.

@kasnavada: Thanks, but that shouldn't be necessary, as it's one machine where I dual-boot, so I can't stay logged in anyway :)

Hello!
I'm a really big fan of Arcen, and have put an unhealthy amount of hours into AI War alone. I remember helping out testing the first AVWW through the mantis bug tracker way back when, and am interested in breaking beta testing Stars Beyond Reach as best I can.  :)
I have quite a bit of free time until the end of the month. If I am accepted, I do not have any preference when it comes to my shirt color, so long as it doesn't have too many coffee stains.

Awesome, welcome back!  I'm marking you as a blueshirt so that we can definitely get you in place for as long as possible prior to the end of the month -- that way you're not jammed up against your end-of-free-time deadline.

I hope I'm not late to the beta party? I'll take any colored shirt. Blue orange green.... brown pants whatever! :)

Brown pants it is! ;)  Just kidding -- I have you marked down for one of the general post-blueshirt waves.  You're not too late at all!

I've got you added in as well as a post-blueshirt!  We'll have a lot of waves in that period, and I'll probably aim to get you in sooner than later after the blueshirts.  Thanks!

Hey Chris,

I'd love to be a part of the beta if you want more testing done. I've been following Stars for a while and am super interested.
I was madly addicted to Skyward Collapse  while back and produced a few bug reports there and still frequent the steam forum for it xD

Keep up the awesome work!
P.S - I'm kind of hooked on ArcenGames's... attitude? to making/supporting games. When I posted a bug for Skyward, you replied like within
an hour and there was a steam patch like 30 minutes later. It just blew me away. So I always want to help you out with whatever I can.

I am probably the first person to use this thread to opt out of the beta after getting in. Something has come up that will keep me from investing any meaningful time into the game for the weeks/months to come. Sucks, because I am really excited for SBR, but it can't be helped  :( Sorry for the inconvenience and good luck with your further testing and the release.

I was just wondering, as someone who has been officially added, by what means we will be notified that our "wave" is about to start.  I was checking the forums (fora?) every few days to see if any big announcement had come up, but then I got distracted, and life got busy and all - and I'm not sure if I'm missing my chance by not checking every couple of days, or if a message will show up in an inbox somewhere.  Will we all get PMs, so we can all just relax until the fateful message comes?  I'm sure we'd all love to know!

Thanks, and I hope the orangeshirts are all doing their blood-stained jobs!   >D

You'll get a PM with a Steam key in it, and the forum should email you when that happens (although it's worth checking back in case the email gets caught in a spamtrap or the forum mysteriously forgets to send it).

And yes, we're doing our jobs. It's dangerous work, but my girlfriend is standing by with lifesaving cups of tea in case the worst happens...

Thank you very much for the kind words, and also for the interest -- I have you added to the beta list!  You definitely aren't too late (nor is anybody in this).

Noting to everyone in this reply, I've been really slow on replies because I kind of had to shut down on forum focus for a bit to really concentrate on some aspects of updating the game.  I'm really feeling the time pressure at this point, and am trying to balance things the best I can, but balls are going to drop for sure, and my main priority is to make sure it's not in the game quality if at all possible!  Thank you for being understanding about my abnormally slow response times.

I hope I'm not too late to the party too. :(

Absolutely no problem whatsoever, and I have to say I really appreciate your being upfront about it rather than just getting into the beta and not really participating.  That's an awesome display of character in my book.  We'll be doing some level of beta testing up until the first week of July or so, so if time does open up for you and you want to get back in, don't feel awkward about it.  There will be a spot for you!  And also don't take that as any kind of pressure from my end to try to make time -- we'll have plenty of testers, though more are always welcome.

Anyway, do what you need to do, and I hope that all is well with this new busyness.

I'd like to beta test, preferably as a blueshirt.

Blueshirt it is!  I expect to send out the invites for that later today. :)

No worries!  I send out a PM to everyone that is in a given wave, with a steam key for them.  If you're worried about missing it, then Fridays and Tuesdays are the best days to check.  I'll usually start a new batch either late in the day EST on Friday or Monday.  About 4:30 pm EST today will be the start of the blueshirts.

UPDATE 5/23:
YES I still want new testers, and no you are not too late.  If you are reading this sometime in June, no you are not too late.  Welcome in!

Okay.  So the blueshirts are in, and a lot of time has passed since the beta has started, and it's time to start doing things differently.  I'm bringing in a new wave of testers every Friday or Monday come hell or high water.  In other words, I will try for Friday so that you have the weekend to test, but if things go awry then I will push back to the Monday night after.

On average, at the moment I will be looking for 11 folks per week, although I could probably go as high as 20 for the next while in particular.  As of the time of this writing we have 83 people on the list to be testers who have not yet been sent keys, and 48 people who have.  We're looking at an early July release, and new folks are still signing up for testing all the time (and VERY welcome to do so in this very thread), so weekly waves are pretty well unavoidable if I still want to have people in waves (which I do want) and not have a bunch of people who volunteered miss out on the beta (which I don't want).  We certainly can use every pair of eyes we can get, and every configuration of computer, and every style of thinking, every mix of past gaming experience, and so on.

If for some reason you have specific scheduling constraints and you need to be in this week (or sooner even) if you're to take part, then just let me know (you can PM me to make sure I don't miss it) and I'll get you in sooner.  I'd rather have folks like that outside of a normal wave than miss their input all together.

Right now there is a signup thread for anyone who wants to be a yellowshirt, which is what I'm calling the folks coming in next week.  But if you are signing up fresh in this thread, you can also just mention that you'd like to be a yellowshirt, or in whatever particular week if you know offhand.

Thanks everybody!

Hi Chris,

I'm not a huge fan of 4X games truth be told (so I didn't think my feedback would be too well orientated and therefore didn't apply for the beta earlier) however if you're wanting a variety of machines to test on and a keen eye to take a look for little things here and there I'd be happy to have a go.

Cheers.

I'm interested in working through this beta test.  Please add me to the list of interested volunteers for the yellow shirts.  I've added a few issues to Mantis, especially during Skyward Collapse.  Over the past few months, I've been really busy and haven't had time previously but, have been following the development of this game over the past year.  As my time has been freeing up over the past few weeks, I should be able to spend more time on beta testing this game.

Thanks,

Jake Kuska

I though so as well. The only thing that got me confused are the orangeshirts.
I took them to be the techie and security guys wearing yellow - but since we are getting a bunch of yellowshirts next, I am confused ???.

Keep up the good work Chris et al.

Hey! The idea of a 4x/city building game with ai war background sounds awesome!

Curses for not having kept closer watch on releases and arriving so horribly late to the party but I would still like to be added to the list of testers.

I had a change of plan wrt my schedule, and will have near zero gaming time from the 22th of june up to the 4th-ish of july.
Don't know which wave I'm in, but if I could be in before too late in june, that would be best :)

Really loved AI:War so if you guys'd have me help in the testing for this I should be free over the next few weeks. Just a quick heads up though my nets capped at 30kb/s at the time of writing this and is due to be reset in around a week so I cant be involved until that's been sorted.  :'(

Hey everybody!  Sorry that I have not been through this thread since the 24th, I am just now catching up on it and adding everybody.  I have yet to go through the yellowshirts thread (that is next), so if you've requested to be a yellowshirt there and not here, don't worry, I'll have you set either way.  Thanks!

A 4X game, from Arcen? Hell yes. I want in too.

Gotcha on the list! :)

I'm a big fan of 4X and like Arcen's approach to customer support. Please sign me up for the beta.

On the list!

Hi

Just found out about this game, and id love to get in as a yellowshirt. I'm wearing a yellow shirt right now in fact, so it must be destiny :)

On the list and yellowshirt, expect a key within 30 minutes.

Hi Chris,

I'm not a huge fan of 4X games truth be told (so I didn't think my feedback would be too well orientated and therefore didn't apply for the beta earlier) however if you're wanting a variety of machines to test on and a keen eye to take a look for little things here and there I'd be happy to have a go.

Cheers.

Right now I do have enough of a pool of testers that I'm not overly worried about the breadth of machines being too small, but having some perspective from someone not in love with the genre as a whole might actually be really useful.  Right now there is some upheaval as things settle into their final form, so I figure that probably keeping you to a bit of a later wave might be wise, if that's okay with you.  If you're not a regular 4Xer, then another thing that might be useful is if you run into something confusing, it might be a 4X semi-convention that the game is tacitly assuming you know, but should not be assuming.  So that might be a particular help with tooltips and tutorials to help folks who are maybe making this their first foray into 4X after jumping from AI War or TLF, for instance.

Thanks,

Jake Kuska

Yellow it is!  Expect a key within 30 minutes or so.  And yes, I remember you, particularly from Skyward. :)

Ain't you going to run out of colors ?

Probably!  But there's only about 4 weeks left, so I'll be okay.

The colours are a star trek reference(The red shirts AKA frontline fighters where first, blueshirts who are scientists/medics after... :) ). Quite clever actually!
I though so as well. The only thing that got me confused are the orangeshirts.
I took them to be the techie and security guys wearing yellow - but since we are getting a bunch of yellowshirts next, I am confused ???.

Haha, the orange was a reference to the fact that they were still half red but getting less red.  I wound up having a second round of redshirts, basically, but I wanted to call them something other than Redshirts II.

Hi there!

I would like to volunteer for the beta please, to be added in whatever waves means NOW :) . I own TLF, the Expansion, Skyward Collapse, AI War and all of its expansions.

I have a blog which sometimes reviews and previews games.

Yellow it is!  Key coming within 30 minutes, check your PMs then.

Have an upcoming trip during which I will have ample time to play. I would like to be added to the beta list  provided I can be on the active list by June 05 [gotta download before leaving] and the game will run on an 800x600 netbook powered by underfed hamsters.

Keep up the good work Chris et al.

Thanks for the very kind words!  I do have a couple of concerns about your setup.  The minimum screen size is unfortunately 1024x720, or else the game won't physically fit on your screen.  I'm also really not certain that a netbook would run it, and if it has less than 3GB of RAM it will die on startup, probably.  The simulation and so on uses a lot of threads and a toaster won't give a very good play experience here.  Most any mainline desktop or midlevel and up laptop from the last 4ish years should be just fine, but netbooks are probably out.  The other concern is that if you have no internet access during that period, you wouldn't be able to really get updates or have feedback, etc; and the game changes pretty rapidly.

I'd definitely love to have you in the beta if you think it could work, but those are the issues I see right now.  Thanks!

Hey Arcen people! I just learned about this beta and I'd love the chance to beta test it whenever you have room for me. It looks really dang interesting. I love your willingness to be different.

I appreciate it!  Added to the list.

I'd like to be involved in testing this game! I've got every single arcen game and I'd love to finally be involved in testing one!

Added to the list!

Wow, a shame I didn't see any info about this sooner. I absolutely loved AI war, and I'd love to help test this new game, which looks even more interesting than the ai war. If you're still looking for testers - please sign me in!

No worries on the timing, it might prove a good thing given all that has changed even just today, heh.  Added you to the list!

I'd also really love to join the beta! I posted in the other thread but I'm just posting here too because I'm not sure which one to post in.

Thanks, game looks great!

Got you on the list from the other thread, and as a yellowshirt.

hmm I'm already signed up with no color as far as i know^^ but as it seems i wasnt yellow ^^ sad day sad day

Marked you as yellow now. :)

Ahhh, you're not really late.  It's a process, and we need people who come in at all stages.  We're still not in that final-polish stage yet, much to my distress, but we're getting close. :)  I've added you to the list!

Hey all!  Sorry I've been so slow on getting folks into this next wave.  Holy smokes this past build was big.  I've now got the following folks new on the beta list:

TyreForHyre
Nubbify
qrter
Chthon
gia
EvilMonk3y
mlwhitt
Chriamon
Tomasdk
LordStryker
MishTheFish

doctorfrog, you were on there since April 17th, so no surprise you didn't remember now, heh.

For the blackshirt wave (coming tonight), I've added (based on comments from this thread):
doctorfrog
Chthon
LordStryker
MishTheFish

Other folks who posted in the actual blackshirts thread will get on there too, of course.

Thanks!

The separate signup threads here and for greenshirts are confusing me!

Basically this part of the signup (i believe but not too sure) is for those who dont really care when they get in but just want to be in, while the greensbirt one is where people want to be in at that specific date. Again I am not sure about this but this is how I believe it is done.

Hello  :)

I have been a fan of Arcen since I discovered AI War a few years ago, and it's still one of my favorite game, even if i'm bad.  :D
I really like the fact that you're not afraid to think outside the box and try something different, so I was really curious when I read about Stars Beyond Reach a few months ago and the recent interview on SpaceSector made me want to play as soon as possible ^^

I have always been attracted to 4x games no matter how much I fail at them, and city building is probably my favorite genre (among others, 200 or 300 hours on Dwarf Fortress and probably 700 or 800 on the Anno series).
I'm really interested in the building part of the game obviously, the fact that you don't need to directly control military units, the focus on single player ...
Being an avid reader i like to take my time and don't skip over ingame descriptions, lore stuff ... So if you feel like you need more eyes on that part, I might be able to help.

I'll have plenty of time to play during the next 4 or 5 weeks and I'll happily use some of it to help in any way a studio that brought me so much fun. So feel free to add me to the list now, at the next wave, the one after that, or never, whatever feels best for you :)

Long time game player, fan of AI War in particular, tester for multiple games and highly active on Steam Early Access (I tend to be involved more in games that are earlier in the cycle but I can still offer good feedback and bug reports), solid testing suite and knowledge of virtual machine testing environs if that helps any.

Hey, long-time Arcen fan here. I'm interested in joining the beta once the diplomacy portion is complete. I'm very excited to see how those changes pan out.

In general, I'm the kind of person who hates 4X games BECAUSE of the Diplomacy aspect. It's almost always slow, unimaginative, boring, predictable, and downright inferior to just wiping out your foes one by one. So I figure that if you can win me over with this new system of yours, you can win just about anyone over.

Hello.

I have, well, most of your games, and I just happen to be looking for a new 4X to scratch that itch. Yours happens to be the only one that looks interesting at the moment, for many reasons.

The thought had been to wait for the release to get the clean experience, but then I stumbled across a mention of wanting fresh eyes. Given that and me not testing or much playing anything at the moment, I figure what the heck, I'll throw my hat and two cents in if you want them.

Tales of Woe is wonderful by the way. When's the third due?

Hey there,

I would be interested in participating in beta.

When I read Arcen was making a 4X my breath caught in my throat, things went dark and some amount of time passed before I woke up.

Inserting that Arcen "I don't really care what the industry thinks I'm going to make an interesting game whether it fails or not." attitude into the ponderous "one-more-turn"-erism and grand strategic depth of the 4X genre is something I'm extremely interested in.

Thanks for your consideration :)

I would love to get into the beta. I'm running a mac 10.5.8, which I believe was the lowest you said you supported.
Looks like a great game, loved your other games too!

I'm happy to beta-test.

Old-timer Arcen fan here. I love AI War and Bionic Dues but really disliked The Last Federation. This one has me very curious.

Whatever you do... DO NOT invite me into beta. I can't imagine the horror of trying out one of your amazing games before it's completed. I mean the hours I would spend on it, just going through every piece of it, giving detailed feedback and bug reports. Can you imagine?!?! The very thought!

Well, I'm not sure how much use I'll be aside from sponging off a beta key, but if a feature I suggested actually made it into "The Last Federation", who knows, maybe I'll do something cool this time around as well.

As a fan of both 4X games (albeit marginal in skill) and never having gone too wrong putting my trust in a new idea from your company, I hereby declare that you may add me if you think it's worth a go, Mr. Park. ;3

I would have some time to help with the next beta wave.

I am a big fan of 4x games, but I am often unhappy about the victory conditions and the endgame.... therefore seldom play a game to the end.
Also, diplomacy often is "meh".

This game sounds absolutely amazing, though. Victory conditions based on diplomacy, city building!, async victory conditions and promising an interesting endgame. Plus, the screenshots look very pretty!

Plus, I am often confused at the beginning of a new game, so I sure can help pointing out confusing parts...
Not much into the techical side of things, though and dont know much about design, either.
So my point of view will be a more..... "girly" one.

Just not sure if my trusty labtop can run the game-
Toshiba Satellite
Intel Core i3- 3217U CPU 1.8 GHz
8GB RAM
Windows 8.1
AMD Radeon HD 7550M

I can run your games like AI War and TLF without problem- also CIV 5 and Beyond Earth for that matter.... ;-)

So, sign me in if I can be of any use.

Thanks everyone!  It has been... three months since I have posted in this thread.  Good grief!

Some general notes:
1. I've read all your notes, and thanks for the kind words and interest. :)
2. Everyone should now be on the list.  The new people on the list since my last post are noted below.
3. I did NOT note the people that were added to the Redshirts V2 (aka formerly Greenshirts) wave, since they already have their keys anyway.
4. Cipherpunk you were already on my list, so you're good. :)
5. Omgaar, glad we missed your busy period; works out well, hopefully!
6. tuigirl, I'd like to use you for one of the waves after we have tutorials in, if you don't mind.  Seems like you'd be perfect for that.
7. For everyone else, I'll add in batches of you every half week or so, leading up to release next month.  You can also sign up for a specific wave if you have a preference.  The next one is for the 30th, so 6 days from now.

Thanks!
Chris

Hello Retroburn here, a Let's Player of freeware and Early Access (mostly indie) games. I got tired of the video game industry after everybody started jumping into the Call of Duty bandwagon and I've branched off now to games that have innovative ideas. I found your Stars Beyond Reach game to be one of these. I'd like to cover it.

If you're interested in the way I cover EAccess games, I would be very happy to cover your game. Please include me in the free beta test!

I'm not PewdiePie (I'm more of a calm Let's Player) but here are samples of my work:

Hello!  Saw the tweet about beta signups.  Linux (64-bit), here, and I use Slackware.  (That's non-negotiable. Half my box is custom for what I need it for that isn't playing video games.  Want to be upfront--the custom stuff is mostly audio.)  If you still need people, I'd be glad to help.  I'm fine with buggy and crashing, although I'd hope for your sakes it isn't crashing 3 weeks out from launch. :)

Thanks.

Well, I just found out that this game exists (on steam) and then that it's possible to be a beta tester (or maybe I'm too late?). I want to if possible :)
I use win 10 and have Intel core i7, 8 GB RAM, geforce GTX 560M 3GB graphic card.

your not to late at all in fact your super early(in a strange way) as I'm sure you know this games development is suspended in till sometime next so I'm afraid you'll have to keep your self preoqupied in till then.

no problem I've taken it upon my self  to reply to new guys hoping to sign on since Chris is super preoccupied at this current point in time(on starbound rogue) also the link to the thread chris made when he announced this.https://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,18040.msg193872.html#msg193872 . ps when chris comes back to this game hell  reply to all the new posts here himself I suspect.

I also just found out about this game while I was looking into the new TLF dlc. Sounds very interesting. Feel free to add me to the beta list when it's back under development.

Win 10, Ultrawide monitor (3440x1440), Amd Fury.

This game looks to be one of Arcen's most ambitious projects to date! Best of luck to you guys, and I'd love to help with the testing once development resumes.

well in that case you may want to help test star bound rogue just send Chris an email and hell come back to you in due time or wait for it to come on to steam(which should be sometime this week) to preorder and get into its alpha. ps technically not preordering since you'll be playing the game straight away shame there isn't a better name for that sort of thing really.

If you are still looking for testers I would very much like to be included in the next wave.

Stars Beyond Reach is in a genre of games that I love and Arcen is one of my go-to developers so I don't see how it can go wrong!

I also hope it's not too late to sign up and would like to add my name to the list.  I wish I'd known sooner that there were beta signups, this game has me very intrigued.

I signed up awhile ago but never got a key but I totally don't mind at all because as I said (in the first post) I can be pretty picky with my x4 games and would like my first experience to be a (mostly) good one.

Also I kinda want to pay for it since I know you guys are/were in a precarious situation. But playing Starward Rogue makes me want to play this again >.<, good thing I'm a patient person :P.

PS: What's the cost of this going to be on release? Got an estimate for it yet?

Bought AI War some time ago and I'm now finally getting into it and looking to write up some AARs here on the forums. I saw this, which sounds right up my alley, so I thought I'd volunteer, if you end up still needing beta testers!

But I am a huge fan of all of Sid's games, and games like MOO2,MOO3.

As most here, I would love to beta test this game! It's the kind of game I like to buy from a shady guy in the park, and then quickly go home, lock the door, close the curtains and inject it straight into my proverbial veins. Oooooohhhh Yeahhhhh that's the good stuff....
