regarding disease and crime
« on: June 17, 2015, 09:10:13 pm »
1 does anybody else feel that diseases have become completely trivial after their nerfing? right now when ever I get a disease I just quarantine get some hospitals up if don't already have any and then ignore it and just get on with my life disease control feels completely worthless now 2 does crime feels extremely easy to deal with to anybody else? after the territory over haul usually I only need 1 police station per territory? not sure if that's a good or bad thing just curious really?.

Disease is waiting on the epidemic function to be added in.  You can't ignore disease though.  It can and will hit you hard if you let it.

Crime can also be a pain in the backside.  You still need just as much police protection as you used to.  This is especially true if you build big cities.

don't forget that crome builds up over time (if this is still true), so crime can come back at you when you won't except it.
Also crime is probably one of the most complex systems int he game because many factors come into it like trash, unemployment, atmosphere, temperature, trash and I think also pollution (but about the last one I'm not entirely sure).
If you forget only about a single thing crome could suddenly arise and stab at you.

However I agree that crime has gotten failry easy to manage since the start of the Beta. Not that that's a bad thing, back then crime was really painful and not enoyable.

I was going to wait and do a sort of first pass of impressions on the game, first one being the art is fantastic! I mean really, really nice, 3d touches and really well done, which makes playing  very nice. Also i like the way the game lets me play 'my' game, which is sorta slow and plodding and methodical and trying to keep my housing just right, and my farms up to par, making sure i have enough jobs for people and stuff. Instead of making me play someone else's style. Which i really appreciate.

With regards to diseases and crime being nerfed, to be honest i was rather pleased that instead of killing me and having me start another game, the game was letting me 'deal' with things, in my noob, learning my way along way. Which is also something i really appreciate. I should mention i am on normal difficulty, so i thought i would probably run into stuff that would roll over me pretty quick, i am used to having to play easy for Arcen games because i get over my head and the game starts to do the evil laugh stuff, muh hah hah ha... just kidding, but what i do mean is that it was really nice to have options to counter the games plays against me, instead of losing and having to start over. I thought it would probably be way different for those on harder difficulties, understandably, but those playing on those levels probably want that kind of play.

Anyway, i like having the disease and crime and even the attacks, at least so far, as being tough, but not killing me off kind of tough. Of course Rooster you are probably a better player than me, and need more challenge, but i think if we leave it the way it is now on normal and raise the stakes for the higher difficulties, then you can play the harder difficulties and have to scramble when diseases and crime hits and me on easy or normal, can fight them off and keep playing.  :)

Thanks for listening,
-Teal

Previously, diseases and crime were such that they would cause a death spiral at the slightest mismanagement or unfortunate death of a key building.  Stuff like this should be a nuisance, and possibly kill you outright, but only if you ignore it for far to long.

You'll have plenty of real threats to your city once the AI and Planet get fleshed out.

All you testers that came before really made it easier on us just starting now. Thanks for that. So far i haven't seen anything out of place, other than things like pulled functions which are going to be redone, or discriptions that i am not really sure what they mean, but other than that, it is very enjoyable and a lot of fun, though i am only in about a hundred and fifty turns, so maybe i am just getting ready to hit the hard part? Haha, anyway, thanks for the info, its always a help.

Heh.  When I started, 150 turns is where I was restarting because of a death spiral.

Anyway, there's a few of us here to answer questions when Chris is busy.   Don't be afraid to ask!

I think if you are new to the game and don't know how stuff works together you can still get some really nasty things. Most of us players who wer in the first bacth find this of course a lot easier since we had a really hard system back then and compared to the new one it was hell.

And Arcen Games are always like "at first you will fail merserable, then there are some more fails but after some while you will succed".
They are usally "Learn from your mistakes" games and SBR seems not different.

I agree too with most of this post, that said... crazyroosterman could have a point about disease being a bit too easy to deal with now.

I haven't tried higher difficulty levels than hard recently, but AFAIK "disease" always start with 100 (and claims to 10% of population, but I haven't seen it). It would be nice if the number was tied to the difficulty level (and also other stats), and somewhat more random.

Ie : in "hard" : base 150 pop, or 15% of max population plus or minus 50% for the "starting" infected.
Ie : in "normal" : base 100 pop, or 10% of max population plus or minus 50% for the "starting" infected.
Ie : in "easy" : base 50 pop, or 5% of max population plus or minus 50% for the "starting" infected.

And so on. Also modify the rest of the statistics (at work, I don't have them here).

I currently feel they're "mostly" fine for "normal" or easy mode (or while learning the game).

Also, the diseases feel kind of generic to me. I know they have "diverse" stats but right now it's a bunch of lines and numbers to me. Some kind of "image" to illustrate it could help with that, as would "highlighting" the disease "strong" and "weak" points. For example, if a disease is "over average" in it's mortality rate, show it in the tooltip by writing it in red, and if it's "under average" show it in blue / green. The "average" would have to be defined though.
