Pushing the schedule back by one week...
« on: April 21, 2013, 11:23:14 am »
Hey all,

So today I've decided to push the schedule back by one week.  Rather than rushing pell-mell to the finish line, this last bit of time gives us a bit of a breather to make sure that things are in better shape even before we start alpha testing.  That last bit of time just makes so much difference, and we have a week to spare before it starts hurting us financially, so we ought to be using it.

Therefore the start of alpha is expected to be more like the 29th, and the beta would be more like the 6th.  1.0 will probably be the week of the 22nd.

The game is coming together really well, but the last thing we want is a rocky start to alpha and beta because we didn't take those last few deep breaths to actually fine-tune things before showing it to you.

Cheers,
Chris

A delayed game is better than a rushed one, even for you guys and your many many patches. :)

Hahaha -- it's still good to have alpha testers, because we want to make sure things are clear and accessible.  That's the biggest worry for me, aside from making sure that we have the balance set up well by the start of that.

Tangent: This is a really odd game to balance, by the way.  We're not actually trying to make this balanced in a traditional strategy game sense.  Instead, we're intentionally putting in certain holes and imbalances and things that are over or underpowered on each side.  That asymmetry makes the player's job of balancing the conflict harder and more interesting.  Rather than it being an exploit in a competitive game, or even a game like AI War.  So our challenge is how to imbalance things in a way that is fun, rather than how to balance it precisely.  It's a completely different proposition, and quite fun, but also really different.

For me, in alpha/beta, it's not just about the bug hunt.  Being the first set of eyes outside the inner circle to see a game and being able to provide some initial feedback is good too.  I feel privileged in being able to participate.  Not to mention that watching a game evolve during these phases is incredibly fun too.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.
