: Contest! Help name the world of Skyward Collapse.
: x4000 April 02, 2013, 01:52:04 PM
Okay, so we've not really shared much about the game yet at all, but we're already running a contest!?  Well, yeah -- before we go live with more details, one of the things we want to come up with is a name for the fantasy world in which this is set.  Naming things is one of my favorite things to do, but I've named a lot of stuff lately and I'm running on empty when it comes to great place names.  So I thought I'd do a contest for this rather than beating my head on a wall! ;)

Prize
We'll thank you in the credits, and you'll get a free copy of the game as well as guaranteed access into the private alpha.

Winning Conditions
To win, we have to pick your specific world name, or we have to come up with something slightly different based on the world name you specified as a direct catalyst.  This isn't a zero-sum game: if several people are involved in refining a specific world name into a final name that we use, everyone involved gets the prize.  So don't be afraid to help improve other people's ideas!  On the other hand, it's possible that if we come up with the best idea internally, and it's not based on anything anyone else said, nobody would get the prize in that case.  But honestly I don't see that happening.

Contest Details
The rules are simple: we need a one-word place name for a fantasy world in which this game is set.  We'll be choosing this at our own discretion based on our own tastes, rather than there being a public poll.  Though obviously we'll read any feedback that people post on the various names.

More details on the world in question: It's the year 1600 in the fictional world of <blank>.  Two civilizations based on the Norse and the Ancient Greeks rule over most of the medieval-style countryside.  They are kind of at war, but it's more of a matter of various sub-tribes battling it out on a local level rather than some large-scale armed conflict.  Mythology and the gods are alive and well, in both the sense of the Greek Mythology and Norse Mythology.

A proper name for this world would have nothing to do with Greeks or the Norse, however, as eventually the world may be expanded through expansions to include other civilizations in a similar manner (if the game proves popular).

Oh, and the world is basically a floating island in the sky, that gets assembled by The Creator (that's you) from bits and pieces of the planet far below, which fly upwards to join the rest of the floating mass in the sky where people actually live.

A bit tongue-twistery, and I'm not generally a fan of place names that start with N just because of how they can wind up sounding negative.  Though that's not a hard and fast thing, because it can also just sound ancient and powerful, like Nurmengard.  Despite what that one is (a fictional prison), it doesn't sound inherently evil to me.

Volaria

This one I like a lot more, though I think the middle phoneme is a little on the weak side.  Vo--ria is a pretty cool construct, though.

I think we should introduce this into the German lexicon.

Holy cow yes on the hyphens and other punctuation.  In terms of not ending in "a," I'm fine either way so long as the name is cool.

Some names from my own generated list of AI War planet names, taken from my most recent game (list: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,9609.0.html):

Chlora
Decima
Sate
Proserpina (nice seed name for my list)
Consent (honestly, this was a generated name)

edit: it's hard to get away from a "-a" ending for a planet name.

edit2: I really like "Firmament" still.
: Re: Contest! Help name the world of Skyward Collapse.
: Faulty Logic April 02, 2013, 03:23:54 PM
Cascadia would be the obvious derivative name. Cascadium, Cascadent, Cascadius, or Cascadanum, could work, but they lose something. I still think just "Cascade" sounds the best out of all of them though.

If you are fine with something that does not sound english, how about:

Caelumno (Cut down to Calumno?)

It is supposedly (hello bablefish) latin for Sky (caelum) and Float (no).

Playing on the latin further gets:

Cretano
Celoino

I suppose I could go on, but it's me picking words from a latin translation page, not something coming out of my own head.

Sorawa is a pun on "Sora wa", "the sky" used as the subject of a sentence in Japanese.

To be fair arcana is just the plural of arcanum and used e.g. to refer to Tarot cards.

Proserpina -- I like that pretty well.

Firmament -- That has a lot of positive things about it, but it also sounds descriptive rather than like a unique place you've never heard of before.  In the case of this naming goal, I'd reject Middle Earth, but be inclined Narnia, if that helps.  Not that I don't like Middle Earth as a name -- it's awesome -- but it's a different feel from what I'm vaguely searching for here.

Cascadia -- I like that a lot as the derivative.  I think that's stronger than jut Cascade, but that's just me.

And yeah, ending in something other than "a" or "ia" is hard.  I really love the name Ivalice partly because it's so unusual with that ending.  Cascadice sounds really odd, though. ;)

The Shelf -- that's pretty cool, actually.  Though it's more of a descriptor than a place name.  It reminds me of The Bastion, which isn't a bad thing, but I think it (and the others like that) are a bit off-tone here.  I'm looking for something that's a bit more mythological-sounding, or like something from high fantasy without being goofy.

Caelumno -- That one's pretty cool, and I know the root from latin quite well.  I think that "ae" sound is a bit harsh, though, at least if you pronounce it the proper latin way.  Doing something based off the partial word "lumno" or similar could be strong, though.  And yeah, I'm quite fine with something that sounds non-english.

"Sora wa" -- Ah, thanks for the clarification on that!

Estroth -- That's a pretty strong one.

Astadus -- That seems close to a strong one, but something about the middle bugs me.  As*dus or As*us could work well, though, depending on what letters replace the star.

Fanerth -- I'm not keen on this specific thing, but something on these lines could be really promising.

Ooh, yeah, so that's out.  That's way too similar given the nature of the games both involving tile placement (if little else in common).

Vanadia -- Now that's sharp.  That's perhaps my favorite so far.  Smacks a little of "Valhalla" without actually being Norse-sounding.  Also sounds a bit like "Vanity" which is something that could be worked into the story in a cool way.  And sounds appropriately "fantasy place-ish."
: Re: Contest! Help name the world of Skyward Collapse.

: Re: Contest! Help name the world of Skyward Collapse.
: x4000 April 02, 2013, 04:16:48 PM
That's a bit close, yeah, but I think it's borderline.  If nothing else pops up that strikes me more, I'm prepared to go with that one despite the similarity.  FFXI and this game have nothing in common with one another, unlike some of the other names that were too close to something else (and some of the others were much closer).  I never played FFXI, so didn't know that similarity, so thanks for bringing it up.

Valhan -- cool but too Norse sounding (it ignores the Greeks).
Vanatira -- "tira" is a cool ending, I note.
Cascold -- that's clever, but feels a bit off.  Maybe Caswold?  Hmm, that's not right either.

Edit: Btw all that talk about Cascade reminds me of Cascada. Too  bad that name is taken, but maybe try Cascuro or something. Or spell it Cascoro. Pronounced Cass Kor Roh I guess. Second spelling might be better.

Vanadia makes me think it was a typo of Canada. In my mind I keep thinking "Vanada, Eh?"

Hmm...random names:

Mythraea
Hyperuranion (a philosophical term from Plato; has a nice ring to it though)
Protokinei (sounds Greekish)
Legioso ("legend")
Mythologos (with a hard 'g', more Greek, though a little too generic)
Logosa
Aethra
Logocaro
Middle-Earth?
Eden?
Pandora?
(All generic enough to avoid lawsuits, by the way. Even "Middle-Earth"; it's actually a translation of Midgard, a Norse mythological concept)

"Accretium" makes me think of black holes. But "Cascade" sounds appropriate, though perhaps plain English words might not be the best for this sort of thing.

Rather than trying to just update the OP, which is something people might not notice, I'm instead collecting my top picks in a locked thread here: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,12776.0.html

Submissions still very much welcome in this thread of course!

Uh oh, just realised that "Aethra" (Greek: "bright sky") has actually been used as the name for several mythological figures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aethra_(Greek_mythology)

I derived it from the word "Aether", which is just a fancier way of saying "ether".

I hope this doesn't invalidate my chances of getting a free Arcen Game :(

There's another thought: maybe we could play with the word Arcen: Arcendia? Naw, too generic. But still. Just an idea.

Okay, so SMF totally stopped giving me notifcations for some reason.  And good grief a lot of ideas while I was not being notified! ;)  Awesome stuff, folks.

Rather than trying to just update the OP, which is something people might not notice, I'm instead collecting my top picks in a locked thread here: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,12776.0.html

Submissions still very much welcome in this thread of course!

That link gives a 404 :(

It works now, not sure why it didn't earlier.

Incidentally, the Dyson Sphere is a theoretical concept from physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson. The basic idea is to surround a star with solar panels, and in that manner (theoretically) capture all the energy it was outputting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere

I once independently came upon a similar design, but that's a story for another day.

This is a brilliant idea, and would be a far more likely case than everyone standardising to one name.

I really, really like the 'every culture has its own name for the place' idea expressed earlier by KDR_11k.  :)

As noted it is probably the most realistic, however how realistic is any given game? And having twenty seven names for a place is probably a marketers nightmare for the studio.  :)   Anyway, with that in mind... a way to address that problem springs to mind...  :)

It might be possible to have the place, possibly the 'first' place that breaks away and is revealed as the first or tutorial level, and is referred to by the same name as the characters themselves referred to it. Simply as 'Skyward'

Which depending on culture could be pronounced as 'Ski-var-ah',  or 'Ssska-wverd' or ... well in different ways. Not intending to be funny or insulting to other cultures, but it could be a single name with branched or mutilated names, or even names in the language of the other peoples...  (Skyward in other languages...)

Such as ... Hacia El Cielo, in Spanish... or  Enohour Samir  in Arabic, or Spre Cer, in Romanian... i guess you get the idea.  :)

[  Sorry, couldn't get Arabic characters to take in the chat window, :(  ]

Anyway... just my opinion, and it might make for a variety of names and be more realistic in that way, and give interesting individual names not only from a 'cultural' point of view inside the game, but what if it was referred to in the same way outside the game? By the players themselves? From all the variety of countries they come from?

Such as :  "I really like that new Arcen 'Eg Fele' ('Skyward' from Hungarian player) game!! :)

Just a crazy thought!  But it might be a little bit cool!  :)

@Teal_Blue Interesting idea, but I'm pretty sure that the title "Skyward Collapse" already means something in and of itself, and this would be a bit like naming Environ "Valley".

The problem with picking any one name is that it unfairly elevates a culture to a pride of place. This was a problem that came to mind initially, but I think we could have a generic term for it like "the World". Evelyn Waugh's City from his A Handful of Dust comes to mind:

"But what do you suppose this city will be like?''

"Impossible to say. Every tribe has a different word for it. The Pie-wies call it the `Shining' or `Glittering,' the Arekuna the `Many Watered,' the Patamonas the `Bright Feathered,' the Warau oddly enough, use the same word for it that they use for a kind of aromatic jam they make. Of course one can't tell how a civilization may have developed or degenerated in five hundred years of isolation ...''

Something to this effect?

Aquohn,
I like the idea you have of each language characterizing some particular aspect of the world rather than focusing on a single word and having that translated into multiple languages.

So some as you say, may call the place 'Valhalla' (the hall of the slain, or heaven in Norse mythology)... while some others refer to it as 'Wa Kesa Ra' (The Broken, in Arabic)... or 'Az Utat' (The Way, in Hungarian) or 'Les Nombreuses Iles'  (The Many Islands, in French)

In this way, each culture is using their own focus and images and traditions and idiosyncrasies to form an image of what they feel this place represents to them, expressed in their own words and language. (Instead of a static word translated among all of them)

Thank you very much for the distinction, I only hope that it could be useful and interesting for Arcen to consider.
Take care,

-Teal

p.s. I am not as widely read, but your Evelyn Waugh reference was very interesting, I am now going to have to read it!  :)

That was my school literature text. So yeah. :)

Actually, the City is not a terribly major plot point in most interpretations, but let's not go off topic.

Using pre-existing terminology has largely been avoided as an option here, but if we're aiming for realism on this level I suppose it could work.

I'm not so sure about the guy who suggested "Dyson" as a name for the world. Which was why I posted this.

Somewhat lesser-known is the fact that the "Gatling" gun was actually named after its inventor Richard Gatling. So I found the fact that the name the Zenith gave their ships is a compound of two human surnames somewhat humorous.

When I was high school, my best friend had an idea for a fantasy setting that he never did anything with, but I always loved the concept: it was a chaotic island where everything - the terrain, the creatures, the inhabitants - had a tendency to be different each time you visit it.

Shinuval was what he called it, which always struck me as a good name for a thing.

(shin-uh-vahl is how it is pronounced, btw)

I'd like to support the notion that the tribes *do* have their own unique names for their world - as this is quite important in many mythologies:

Følån, one name for the world. Based on a place I'm interested in visiting.

Gaios, the other name.

...Based on this, I would like to also suggest two alternative introductions when you start the game (selected randomly or both presented). One from the Greek point of view, and one from the Norse. Should help players understand their respective depths.

The official name given by the rest of the galaxy is, of course, neither. :)

While personally, I love the idea of having two different names for each of the tribes, it won't really work in this case. The exact reason isn't really something we're willing to talk about yet, but, we did discuss this idea when it was raised here, and it just won't work.

Oh well. Here are a couple more:

Caelis/Caelos/Caelestis/Caelorum/Caelo (all variations of the last one, "heaven" in Latin, from which we derive "celestial")
