Stuck in Stantonsburg
« on: April 19, 2013, 08:15:42 pm »
I'm still near the start of the game but I'm stuck with 4/6 in Stantonsburg. From googling around it sounds like I'm missing the hammer but for the life of me I cannot find it - I've been running around blindly for over an hour now and I swear I've explored every nook and cranny... at least twice.

Any help would be much appreciated.

There are a couple of events that you may have missed.  The sledge hammer is in the warehouse, so it sounds like you're not able to get in there yet.  If Arlene is standing outside the warehouse door, then just talk to her and she'll give you the red key.  Once you go in the warehouse, go down a screen and there is a tunnel to go through.  On the other side is the sledge hammer.

If Arlene isn't standing outside the warehouse, then probably you've not talked to her yet and gotten the purple key.  If she won't give you the purple key, it's because you didn't talk to Willis.  But because you've done 4/6 levels I suspect you've already done both those things.  Anyway, Willis is across the bridge to the west of the warehouse.  Arlene is in the house in the bottom left of the screen called "Stantonsburg East."  If she is not there, then she already gave you the purple key.

She'll just be gone for a while until you use the purple key to do the level in the upper left of the town.  Once you do that, then she'll turn up just to the left of the warehouse and you can get on in.

Once you have the sledge, you can go up north and find the water balloons, and from there you can get to the rest of the levels.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've talked to Willis and he said I should go talk to Arlene but she still tells me I need someone to put in a good word for me.

Hmmm... actually, check your inventory if you don't mind.  Do you have a purple key there?  I think that she already gave you the key and then went back to her prior text.  When she said she was giving you the purple key before, it went straight into your inventory, which I think might have been the confusion.

No key, http://i.imgur.com/ol9VCJz.png

I guess this explains why after over an hour of searching I couldn't progress ;)

If you send me your save, I'll hook you up.  But it looks like you've already been into the warehouse, unless you got that gun from the shop.

Gun was from the shop.
I cheated and snuck by the frozen greys by letting them take a bite out of me to wake up and then I ran by.

That's not really cheating, it's ok. :)

In terms of the save, I'm getting a 404?

You may have tried to get it before I edited and fixed a missing 's'. My fault!

Okay, here is a fixed version.  You can now get into the level in the upper left part of the town, where the purple door was.  Also, Arlene is now waiting for you by the warehouse.

I'm really sorry about this -- I'm not sure how this managed to come about, and why nobody else has seen this out of all the people playing the game.  Although I do seem to recall there was an issue with something in Stantonsburg in an earlier version of the game.  Are you playing on one of the later versions of the game, or are you still on 1.000?  If you're on Steam it auto-updates you.  Anyway, you'll need the latest version of the game to open the fixed save that I've attached.

Glad we got that sorted, anyway!

I'm on the steam version, so it is the most updated one.
Save loaded fine, thanks a million!

I think it was related to from which direction you approach Arlene...

I've encountered the same problem. Steam version.

What seemed to happen in my case is that I talked to Willis, and he told me to talk to Arlene. I couldn't remember which house she was in so I eventually had to save and quit. When I came back and found her, she wouldn't recognize the fact that I talked to Willis, and Willis wouldn't mention Arlene again. So I think it's possible that the flag isn't being saved there.

Anyway, it means I'm currently stuck.

Hmm, if you post your save I can check it out and see what I can see.

There's no reason a flag would not be saved if the rest of the game is saved, so there's something else going on...
