I played BF3 in beta and the only advantage I had from that was that I hated Metro. Beta stats were not persistent ;p

And for AVWW playing the beta is a distinct disadvantage compared to new players. Because you are confused by new and old concepts, changes you didn't notice and changes you even wanted but forgot about.

Also.. and primarily, AVWW is not a competitive MP game ;P Most of these never offer more than 1-2 maps in the beta exactly because of this.

Good points, all of them, but don't forget, you'll be one of many noobs so it's likely you'll be on servers full of noobs.  ;).

And I would say to expect to die a lot, unless your used to Tribes.  I wasn't and man did I suck for the first couple of weeks or so. But now I'm pretty good.

I played over voice chat with a couple friends on the same server so that helped make it fun too :)

At present, there are only public servers where everyone plays. You are just randomly tossed into a game in progress. You can also join friends and followers in their games, as soon as a slot opens up. The sneak preview of custom servers were launched on release but I haven't had time to look at it yet.

And as King said, the only advantage people are going to have over new players are practice. It doesn't matter if you have every weapon if you can't use them. Armor upgrades are also very marginal, but they do help out. But 100 extra HP on a medium class isn't going to win or lose the game for you, neither is a +10% run speed. Every little bit helps, but nothing is so overwhelmingly awesome that it's an iWin button that's going to grind new players into fine paste. I've said it before, and I say it again: Tribes isn't pay to win. Never was, never will be.

yet.

This is patently false. The entire premise of giving people bonuses for pay to play games is to give you an advantage over someone that doesn't have the time or the money to get them. Ask any league of legends player about runes or the flavor of the month, and you will get the same answer. Every little bit helps to give you an edge, and I wouldn't want to play on a server where everyone is flying around with the good stuff, and I've got a nerf gun and a bike helmet for armor.

Okay, I'm a fully upgraded Infiltrator. I have 1 more grenade than you. I have 100 more HP than you, and run 10% faster (in a game where you barely ever touch the ground). I also have the choice of a slow firing, mid damage explosive weapon or an SMG with slightly higher DPS but is rubbish indoors.

Fine. I'm arguably better. But it's not gonna mean squat when I come up against someone who is plain more skilled than me. Not one bit. Absolutely nil. The only time it will matter is when I face someone EXACTLY as skilled as I am. If I face someone worse, I own them. Regardless of upgrades. I face someone more skilled, I get pasted. My upgrades mean squat.

Pay 2 Win means you give people that pay for the game an obvious and measurable stupid advantage. It means you give someone a Spinfusor that does twice the damage of the "free" Spinfusor. Pay 2 Win does not mean that you give everything to your paying customers as you give your free customers. Because everything you can get for gold, you can get for XP, except the skins, which are entirely cosmetical and have 0 impact on performance.

If I want a Spinfusor for my infiltrator, I have the option to use one. It's not better than my SMG (honestly, it's worse), but I have an OPTION. As a non-paying customer, you have these options too, only you don't get it instantly.

How is that "pay to win"?

Well I played it now and it is not really p2w.. rather it is infinitely more grind than I want to have in a game. Also the game feels way too .. arcade. Regenerating health also SUCKS, wow, Can not express how much I hate that. Nothing sucks more than trailing a jug only to get him down to 2 hp run out of ammo and see him go back to full health. WTF ? In a tactical game like Tribes, regenerating health?

I've never played any previous games of Tribes, so how were they more tactical?

It's funny, but I don't notice the grind in this game, I guess it's because I've played far more grindy games before.

Well, you've managed to convince me that it's probably not P2W, so, I'll give it a shot and see if I like it.

Grindy? That depends on why you are playing. If you are playing for the unlocks, you're doing it wrong. I'm playing for fun. Nothing else. I'm currently sitting on a pile of 220k + XP that I don't really know what to unlock with, because I'm having so much fun with my current classes and weapons. I'm in it for the enjoyment, not "Have to get to dah next level, boyos!". It's not an MMO. It's a shooter, where experience and time gives you more options. The options should not be your goal.

Tribes definately has its flaws, but I feel most (not all) of the criticism in this thread is very misguided. The regenerating health is something I'm split on. It's convenient to not have to suicide back to base just because you got hit on route and it's long enough time to not matter jack in active combat. In the situations where it really would've mattered (flag carriers), it's disabled. So I'm actually quite fine with it. If you get a JUG down to 2 HP and then let him regen to full, then...I'm sorry to say this, you need to learn to aim better. A healthy sneeze is all that's required to cancel and reset the regen timer (which is stupidly long btw). SMGs are lovable for that. Tag an escaping enemy, and his timer is reset for others to finish him off.

It also makes it important to make sure to finish attackers off, otherwise, they'll be back in 30 seconds harassing you again. I dunno, it does have both its pros and cons.

With grindy I meant the gameplay, stuff lives too long, regenerating health, etc. The game is simply too fast paced to have weapons do 70 dmg when someone has 2500 HP ,p And conversely if 2 brutes camp on the flag it takes forever go grind them down to corpses.

or have the random luck of hitting with the spinfusor in a chase

Also in the case i described I hit the dude 100% of the entire magazine (it was my last), that just ain't no fun.

Yeah, I really don't like regenerating health either.  I do like large health pools so fights take several shots.  But if health regens too, things get ugly.

There's a Penny Arcade strip in there somewhere.

1) (Dude snapping new clip into machine gun while running after Other Dude)
2) (Other Dude just standing there looking mildly confused while Dude empties entire clip at point-blank range)
3) *click* *click* (Magazine empty) (Other Dude cracking goofy smile) "That tickled!"

You seem to be mistaking "fast paced" with "instakilling everything". It's a feature of Tribes that nothing dies easily (except for that bloody generator). It's by design. You're supposed be live for a bit, especially if you're a heavy. Very little in Tribes is actually inolving direct kills (save for TDM). In CTF, you have jobs to do, depending on your role. You only kill people that get in your way of that goal. Your goal is never to kill anyone. (Save for a bombarding heavy, or running capper)

If two Brutes are camping the flag, they're doing it wrong :P Brute is an assault class that excels at indoors combat. There should be Dumbbringers (sorry Doombringers) on the flag. Anyways, there are ways to deal with that too. If I'm a capper, I pick a backwater route to the flag so they don't instantly see me coming. I ask my team to clear the flag stand (taking out turrets, mines and any HoF) so that I'm free to cap.

And yes, killing a heavy on the flag is tough work. It's intentional. It's not the cappers job to clear the flag stand. His job is go bazillions of Km/h to snag the flag and get back home alive.

Hitting someone "by luck" with a spinfusor happens very seldomly. Aim for the spots where he'll land, or where he needs to touch the ground to ski. Don't try to snag him in the air unless you are insanely good at predictions. Or stupidly close, but then the shotgun would be better suited. Also, automatics are gold for chasing.

Last note: If you ran out of ammo on the heavy, switch to your backup weapon and finish him off. If you were out of ammo on that too, grenade him. If you didn't have any grenades, MELEE him. If you can't, well...really? If he didn't have regenating health, you wouldn't have killed him regardless, so what is really your issue here?

EDIT: I'm sorry if I come across as "elitistic" or "fanboyish" here. It's not my intention. But, from my perspective, it looks like most, if not all, of your criticism stems from the fact that you simply do not understand the game yet. It might be that T:A is not a game for you. But don't judge it by the same metrics as your cookie cutter shooter, because it was never intended to be that way. They made some big steps away from Tribes (regen health being one of them) but most of them for good reason.

My current gripes with the games are the call-ins. They severely unbalance the game in CTF and are all but useless in TDM. They should be removed, save for the Supply depot call in. Or made insanely more expensive. Being able to clean out an entire flag stand for 4k credits is just beyond stupid. Thankfully, custom servers take care of that nicely.

As a case in point, I have barely any issues killing stuff with SMGs. Even heavies. Regenerating health rarely (if ever) is an issue as stuff dies long before that even matters.

Heh I guess the Tech SMG is weaker then and as techs are often the only ones who are near the flag besides heavy stuff (slow) there is often a tech involved in chasing stuff, also no alternative weapon on tech.. least not by default.

But k.. i'ts a free game.. I rather play BF3 to be honest, even a free game needs to get its hook right. And when I get 500 XP for WINNING a game with 4 of 5 flag captures and 9x flag pickups (but not much else, I was on a good capture run) then that is just... stupid. That is no reward, and given that I am tactically gimped until I have ALL classes unlocked this is an insult.

And yes, I do play online for having fun. But I am not having fun in Tribes. Every time I lose a match it's usually because half the other team is using weapons I have no access to.

And if you now say that weapons are taste, I just say MIRV launcher.

The MIRV does a lot less damage than the mortar. It's more efficient at cleaning up players due to the larger splash, but pretty much useless for anything else.

As for the technicians SMG ; it's actually the highest DPS weapon after the Doombringers Chaingun. It's got around 15 % higher than the Infiltrator SMG. Then comes the Raider SMG and finally the Soldier AR.

But at least you were straight now. You simply don't like it. That's absolutely fine. Not every game is for everyone, even if there's nothing wrong with the game per se.
