What's the difference between magma pipe and magma pool? i know it has something to do with Hidden Fun Stuff, but i haven't an idea what (or forgot).

Actually, Magma has nothing to do with HFS in 40d. A magma pipe's effectively a mini-volcano, which provides infinite magma as it's self-filling. A magma pool on the other hand, has a finite supply of magma, and doesn't refill.

I think both pipe and pool spawn Fire Imps and such in 40d, but I couldn't swear to it.

Ouch RCIX, that sounds tough :/ I personally always bring an Anvil. You could probably buy one off the first caravan. I personally never have a forge down before the first (or even the second O.o) caravan. It takes me quite a while to get bedding and food supply (drinks as well) up and running. I'm probably doing a ton of errors.

I'm also pretty suckage when it comes to the whole army business, so the first goblin invasion usually wipes me out. ><

Say hello to my new underground dwarf Condo-plex! I'll post more pics when it's done, but what do you think so far?

Nice! Nobles will hate it :D Are you gonna turn those beds into bedrooms and add doors, or will it a be an open dormitory-type area?

Anyone who know, btw: What is the difference between simply plopping down a bed and defining it as a bedroom? (Not assigning it)

Don't worry, i'll put a nice room complex for the vermin nobles deep underground in my fortress :)

I'm making them the most compact bedrooms possible: a bed, with a door in front: the 4 central 3x3 areas will be small dining rooms, probably add more after a while.

As far as i can tell, dwarves won't use beds that haven't been made into a bedroom. If you don't assign it though, then it's sort of a community bed (and i think dwarvs will appropriate it IIRC).

If visual clutter annoys you (as it does me) you might want to consider making your warrens a little longer.. If there's a bed, cabinet and chest, all claimed by a stunty, then they'll dump their spare kit in those, as opposed to just leaving them lying around in your stockpiles/dining rooms/blocking a doorway..

Dorfs get a happy thought for sleeping in their own bed, and an even happier one if the room's high-quality. Which is why I tend to smooth, then engrave all bedrooms, no matter who they're destined for. Besides, it gives my engravers a nice bit of practice. :)

Also, from an efficiency perspective.. While yes, having a 2x2 block of up/down stairs is very time-efficient both to map out and for your Dorfs' time-management, it's anecdotally terrible FPS-wise. I've recently switched from using stairways to a central spiral ramp, and the length of time before I hit FPS-death has noticeably increased. YMMV of course.

Central spiral stair? Care to share a screenshot of that construct? Not sure I follow there otherwise.
And yes, I tend to give each dwarf a bed, a chest and a cabinet in their rooms, so my dormitories for regurlar (non-vermin) dwarves tend to look like a long, two-space wide, corridor with a one space opening into a three space room in a T formation. So the bottom of the T connects with the corridor and the roof of the T is the room itself. Perfect for placing a chest and cabinet on each end, and a bed in the middle. Close it up with a door between the corridor and the room. Voilá! Cheap room for lowly dwarves.

I tend to smooth, but not engrave, normal dwarves rooms. Mainly because subsequent nobles may throw tantrums if they feel they are sleeping in "lowly" quarters. They WILL compare their quarters to non-noble dwarves and get upset if there is only a marginal "quality" difference. Therefor I leave engravings to nobles and common dining areas.

On another note: Is there anyone who has tried to drain a river (to build a dam) by digging deep into a cave complex and filling the caves with river water? I have to try that sometime :D If there is no river that flows off the map in the cave system, but just a lake, it SHOULD theoretically overflow and eventually fill completely with water for lots of "fun" :D

I have a question: how do i run a big fortress without making the elves go nuts from my deforestation efforts? it's not like i can replicate wood logs or anything...

Also, what's your favorite "little touch" DF has? mine is how the ground slowly wears to dirt on well-traveled paths.

Further question: some of my digging was canceled due to "damp stone", but i made them dig it out anyway and there was no water. ??? Edit: whew, it was from water above my condoplex. That was close!

All you really need wood for is for making beds and for making charcoal. All the other stuff can be made from rock or metal.

Also, what's your favorite "little touch" DF has? mine is how the ground slowly wears to dirt on well-traveled paths.

Definitely the way they vomit all over the place because of cave adaption. Sorry for being so vulgar.

Some of my digging was canceled due to "hot stone", but i made them dig it out anyway and there was a whole pipe full of magma >:(. Remember, loosing is fun  ;D

Always save before you force digging out of hot/damp stone! :)

I have another question: i dug out a warehouse floor for all my junk, but it's practically full of stone. Any way to clear the floor?

Make a dump site and dump all the stones there. You first define a tile as a dumping platform by way of zoning (I don't remember the keyboard command for zoning, I believe it is 'i'?). Then you 'k' over every stone you want removed and mark it for dumping ('d'), and your idle dwarfs should then take them away. The nice thing is that your dump zone (the tile adjacent to the dumping platform) is able to hold all the stones in your entire fort, if you so wish. It is great for stone management: red stones in one dump, yellow stones in another etc.

If this explanation is unclear, check the DF wiki entry: Stone management.

 :)

Oh cool! it works :) Only problem is i'm afraid trash will get in with my stone.

I think the dwarves are actually from the future with advanced space compression; how else could they cram 200 stones into 1 tile?

I've not been in DF since my last post, so no spiral-ramp screenie, I'm afraid.. Just wanted to share a couple pro-tips..

d-b-d allows you to mass-dump within a selection rectangle, once you've set up (i) a garbage dump. This helps save your fingers. ;) Then, once it's dumped, it's automatically {Forbidden}. To mass-unforbid, it's just d-b, then area-select over the forbidden items to make em available again. That way, the stone's usable, and any stray corpses get carted back to your refuse stockpile.

With the damp stone.. The most common cause is that you're digging on the z-level beneath a river/lake/pool/well/whatever, so you should be fine. It's warm stone that's the potential for !!fun!!. If you find warm stone, back off, go up a z or three, then tunnel back. Rinse and repeat till you don't hit warm stone, and you should hit open air above a magma pipe/pool.

And my favourite little touch? Tantrum spirals. Urist McUnfortunate dies to carp. Urist's wife, Urist throws a wobbly and smacks the nearest thing upside the head, killing someone's pet kitten. Urist McKittenlover sees red and takes it out on the nearest person, who happens to be that lazy bugger that hangs out in your dining-room all the time and has eleventy-hundred best buddies. McKittenlover's in the military, and promptly bifurcates McLazysod. This usually all calms down with one Dorf left in the whole fort, rocking catatonically in the corner, wearing his mate's face as a hat..

LOVE DF. :D
