: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Teal_Blue September 22, 2013, 07:33:54 PM
Well, i really have gotten inspired by BD and wanted to see what some other RL's were like, and so i set off and ran straight into the classics, Rogue, Angband,  ADOM, Dwarf Fortress, Tales Of Maj' Eyal, Brogue, Doom RL, Teleglitch and others.

Whoa!! What a group of inspiration and difference. I must say i haven't yet dove in. So far just downloaded and checked out videos on YouTube to see how they play.

I still have my hands full with BD, every time i think i'm doing OK, i run into something i wasn't expecting.  :)

Well, that keeps it interesting though.  :)

I noticed dungeons of dredmor strangely lacking off your list. It is a good one!

"Sword of the Stars: The Pit" is another one worth looking at :)

There's one called Crawl Stone Soup or something like that that's pretty good, too.

: madcow September 22, 2013, 08:27:02 PM
Oh yeah, heard good things about sword of the stars: the pit.

I would recommend starting with dredmor or there first. Graphics and usable UI adds a lot especially if you're new to the genre! I haven't played the pit, but I think dredmor would win out for its humor and amazing skill system.

DoomRL and Dredmor are pretty freaking great.  Brogue is decent too.   Angband, hmm.... my problem with the "big 4" of roguelikes (Hack, Crawl, and so on) is that they actually go completely overboard with the randomness, and not at all in a good way.   I actually dont care for them myself.  Havent played this "stone soup" version of Crawl myself though, that may be different.   Dredmor though is the best one to start with.  DoomRL uses great mechanics but it does become very difficult.  Offers alot of difficulty settings though, and stuff like that.  Keep your speakers on if you play that one, the sound is actually important.

Dwarf Fortress is absolutely amazing, but.... Lol, make sure you understand what it means to learn THAT game.   I sat through 50+ tutorial videos on Youtube to learn this one, and even then, that sure as heck aint gonna teach you everything, it just gets you started.   But.... ahh, bloody amazing game indeed.  So very good.  And hilarious.

Relatively. ;)

As for Fortress mode...

Well, it's been said: Dwarf Fortress is the Dwarf Fortress of simulation games.

I started out with Dungeons of Dredmor.  It's a pretty good introduction to the genre.  I've been playing a lot of "action roguelikes" lately -- games that apply roguelike concepts to action games.  Spelunky, Binding of Issac, Rogue Legacy, and Legend of Dungeon are some good ones to check out if this interests you.

FTL is really good.  I guess I'd call that a strategy roguelike.  Also, this (http://www.desura.com/games/neo-scavenger) looks really promising, although I haven't tried it yet.

Oh man. The action roguelikes of BoI and Spelunky. Soooo good. Spelunky even has a freeware version out there to try.  There's a lot of depth to the genre.

I hate to just jump in like this for my first post here but being an RL vet/dwarf fortress perfectionist.  I noticed a serious lack of anyone mentioning "Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead", or "Unreal World RPG".  These are two awesome contenders in the RL arena.  Very much worth checking out if you haven't already!

official sites
Cataclysm dda - http://en.cataclysmdda.com/
UnReal World RPG - http://www.unrealworld.fi/

you can thank me profusely when you try them out, they are indeed that good! :)

Indeed, I could I forgot to mention Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead. It's a really good game too.

Teleglitch is also a good pick. :)

I have been watching the youtube videos for Neo Scavenger, and for Unreal World... they are Survival RL's and they are really, really cool, not a twitch fest, but rather slow and sedate (haha, i really love that!) and i am loving both of them.

Really, really neat games, you should take a look.  Neo Scavenger is $9.99 on Desura and $10 on the Neo Scavenger Homepage

And Unreal World is free or donation ware.

in case some of you don't know anything about Cataclysm DDA and to entice you into trying it!

CDDA is a turn based apocalyptic survival game.  notice I did not say "Post apocalyptic".  imagine every end of civilization scenario you can think of, and you will more than likely see it in CDDA.  you have to eat, sleep, drink, find/build shelter.  you can fix up and drive any car or build your own mobile base or death machine.  upgrade your character with Skyrim like character progression, (train the skills you want by reading or performing actions associated)

you can also augment your character with mutations, or cybernetics.

its completely open world, procedural cities/landscape.  And it is completely free.

you may not care what I think but its an easy number two (after DF) in my top ten rougelikes.

Actually, my horrendous knifing skills are much more to blame  :-\

Now that I've seen the movies that show how to get into the game, I should do a bit better.  I'm good at avoiding damage and relatively accurate; I just kept running out of ammo.
: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Teal_Blue September 26, 2013, 12:06:31 AM
Now of course, don't blame me if you develop a tick from all this running around and shooting and dodging and shrieking and oh my!!  Cursing! and crying, and bleeding... and ... was that an ammo pickup? Really? Really? A real-like ammo pickup, there, right past those columns, where-OH No!!! Zombies!! Dozens and dozens of them!!

:)

I am loving my slow paced Neo Scavenger and Unreal WOrld...  :)
I got Teleglitch too, its the demo from the ModDB site,  but i keep dying, haha, i'm not as co-ordinated or quick and i keep making the wrong turns!!!

But it sure looks cool!!  I could see this as a spectator sport where people watch matches with the best players running levels against the ai.  :)

Teleglitch is insanely fast and you don't really have the right to make mistakes... It's what make it so good but also frustrating at some times. :)
: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Misery September 26, 2013, 08:12:12 AM
Well I tried out Teleglitch after another random impulse purchase.  Very darn good, that one.  Definitely my sort of thing.

Though with all I heard about it I'd expected the early levels to be harder than they are.   Much stabbing occurred.  Though that's not as amusing as knocking enemies into the funky void walls.

Very atmospheric game, too.
: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Winge September 26, 2013, 07:35:49 PM
Yeah, I only had trouble in the first few levels of Teleglitch because I am horrible at stabbing.  Good at dodging, bombing, and shooting but HORRIBLE at stabbing.  Definitely practicing that to try and smooth out some of the rough edges.

Definitely considering trying out Dreadmor too, that looks hilarious.  I love the name of their firs expansion pack too  :D
: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Misery September 26, 2013, 08:32:45 PM
Oh yeah, Dredmor is totally worth it.   There arent that many games that give you as much sheer content and such as that one.  There also arent many that can be that hilarious.

It's also the first game I've seen to have an achievement that you get if the game crashes.   I always thought that was particularly hilarious.   And of course one for naming that expansion pack, too, hah.

Difficult game though with alot to learn; nice easy initial learning curve, gets mean quick though, and there's about 2 zillion different items and such.   And those Monster Zoos.

Expect to be congratulated for dying fairly often.
: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Billick September 27, 2013, 09:02:26 AM
I finally got a chance to play the demo for NEO Scavenger the other night.  I like it a lot.  There's a lot of tension, as you need to balance your different needs to stay alive (food, water, staying warm, etc.).  Do I eat that mushroom that could be poisonous to keep from starving?  Do I fight this bandit who's chasing me, or do I try to run away?  The combat is kind of like Dwarf Fortress, in that instead of hit points, you get injuries to body parts which affect  your abilities to do things.  Unlike DF though, you get to control what you do in each round of combat.  I'll definitely be buying this game at some point.

Oh, and to keep this somewhat on forum topic, I'm really looking forward to BD.  I'm not in the alpha, but I've been following the development, and it looks like it's going to be really good.

Thanks for the recommendation on Cataclysm DDA, but, one quesiton... how difficult is that to get into? It looks daunting at first glance. Is the learning curve like that of Dwarf Fortress?

I started playing a bit of Cataclysm DDA and its not real steep at all. I mean, i haven't played a roguelike at all until recently and it seems pretty straightforward. Not easy, i was chased and killed by zombies my first game, but it isn't hard to learn or anything like that.

Hope you like it, its really a lot of fun.

Loving Dredmor right now, thanks for the tip.  Have to make sure it doesn't cut too much into my Bionic Dues time  ;)

I was doing horrible at that game, and then my most recent character just clicked.  He's in level 7 right now, which is more than twice my next-best character.  Must be the flannel...

Going to have to give a plug to ADOM here, it's what got me hooked on the genre, and has consumed way more time than I care to admit. Someone mentioned that it goes overboard on the randomness, but I have to disagree. ADoM has a pretty big focus on randomness, but almost everything is within your control. Every situation that you put yourself in is something that you can control. Take for instance the Dwarven Halls, where insanely out of depth creatures can appear. You may have an incredibly easy time with it, or you may spawn on a floor with a titan, a balor, and an ancient karmic wyrm, but it was your choice to go that way rather than the Animated Forest. The one thing that annoys me is dying to early door traps, but they have gotten turned down in the most recent patches.

: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Misery October 10, 2013, 08:47:31 AM
....there's a special edition of that game?

They dont say too much about it there though, do they... extra character class and some more quests.  Hmmmm.

Bloody great game either way though.  It's progressed ALOT since the original free version.
: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: Rekka October 10, 2013, 10:04:53 AM
I did buy the special edition cause I enjoyed the game. But at that time, the special content wasn't in (the special character is in now (http://www.desktopdungeons.net/special-edition-character-now-available/)). It's not mandatory in any ways, it's more of a "support the dev" edition. You'll be just fine with the 10$ one and I think it's worth it. ;)

I am having a TON of fun with Desktop Dungeons.  I also bought the special edition for $20.  You also get a special building, but I don't know what it is because I have not progressed too far yet.  This is such a fabulous game.  I played it last year when it was still "low-res", and I really enjoyed it.

But, they have added so much new stuff that it's almost a brand new game.  It is a huge game now.  You get so much wonderful content in this game.
: Re: BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
: zespri October 10, 2013, 04:42:26 PM
I bought the special edition more than two years ago, and that time there was not difference between special edition and normal one. So, sorry, I'm not sure what the difference is.

When I downloaded the free version last year, it had just the basic graphics.  And, there was no world map or constructing new buildings or anything.  You just selected a race and class, and went into the dungeon.  Now, the graphics are outstanding and there is so much more to the game.

I thought that these were new additions in the past year.

The basic free version is still just the original game.  No changes.

The new graphics and all of the new gameplay stuff is the paid versions only.  Very, very different game at this point.  Very worth it, too.
