Title: Megaman 8-bit Texture Pack (WIP)
Post by: Nethellus on May 09, 2012, 11:02:32 PM
I've been placing some old Megaman sprites in the game for my own amusement, and so far it is looking quite nice I think. I've never been a fan of the original art in this game anyway. Perhaps someone else would also be interested in using this pack when it is complete?

So far I haven't done that much, but here is a screenshot of Blizzard Man in a blizzard, a taste of how things might look like in the end:

Wow.  That's pretty ambitious.  That'll be amazing if it comes out looking like that.

Funny how most of the first mods and such to come into the game are Megaman.  LOL.

Because Megaman is awesome I assume, and this game does bring back fond memories of the great platform games of the past. =)

Speaking of which, here is Chill Man chilling in an ice age building:

O_o....now I'm curious if someone will do a Metroid version. This is very cool. This might be the first pack I actually try in AVWW  :D

Thanks guys! I'm glad you like it. =)

And here is Gemini Man who seems to have found a secret mission:

I think it's pretty easy to replace the music in this game as well, and the the old Megaman games have some of the best game music ever made in my opinion, so imagine all these screenshots with a soundtrack something like this:

I'll totally try this out when you finish.

The character swaps from other modders felt so out of place and looked bad in the AVWW world art, and this totally is the way around that problem.

Sometimes, the characters seem out of proportion since they are taken from sprite much wider and shorter than the original AVWW characters(also too short or wide for their hit box), it's hard to tell just by looking, but those small looking megaman characters fill their hit boxes properly?

Nanostrike made plenty of examples of bad sizing, but I'll just use one example, he swapped Jack with a sprite almost half his height.

Post by: Nethellus on May 11, 2012, 03:55:52 AM
Hitboxes will not be exact, but the characters will be of the correct height, just not always of the right width, which does not matter as much I think. The characters in the screenshots looks small because they are wider than the characters they replace, but they are of the right height.

EDIT: This just in! Ice Man encounters ice pirates at a building made of ice!

GASP!! Not the Sky Pirates!

Will you swap their projectiles?

I can imagine many possible levels in the future for when we are able to board their ships(I'm assuming that's what they are hinting at wherever it mentioned the Illari finding a way to let us fight them).
Title: Re: Megaman 8-bit Texture Pack (WIP)
Post by: Nethellus on May 12, 2012, 01:45:35 PM
I will swap all projectiles, if I can. I have found particles to be tricky to work with, but I will do what I can. =)

Boarding the ice pirate's ships would be awesome, and I imagine that I would have to change their design quite a bit if that were a possibility.

One thing that might be impossible to change in this game is the fonts, I can't seem to figure it out. If anyone knows how to do it I would appreciate any help.

Depending on how they render the fonts, changing them might be difficult at best. I'd probably have to let Keith or Chris comment on that.

Post by: Nethellus on May 12, 2012, 03:39:24 PM
I've learned that changing the fonts is impossible, so no need to worry about that any more.

EDIT: In the year 200X, a super robot named Mega Man was created.

Liking this a lot. This might be the first texture pack that I use, just for fun. Are the mobs going to get makeovers as well?

Yes all the enemies will be changed. Pretty much every texture that I can edit I will. =)

And here is our hero Mega Man with a brand new GUI:

EDIT: Does anyone know where the textures for the consciousness shards is located? There is a bunch of folders in ItemIcons with consciousness shards in them, but changing the files in those folders does not appear to work. The shards in game still use their original sprites for some reason. It may have something to do with the Particles.xml, I guess.

EDIT2: Nevermind. I found it. It was in a weird place, and the unused duplicates did not help either. =)

I am going to be watching this mod. I always found that the original AVWW graphics were just wrong for the genre of game it is, and... well... Megaman! I mean, it would only be better (For me) if there was an MLP:FiM related graphical change...

Sadly (And I guess "luckily" for some of you) I'm not a modder, so I'm not the person to go to for doing anything mod related >.>

Anyway, I can't wait for this to be done and readily available, it'll definitely enhance my experience with this game.

Post by: 7foot_sativa on May 14, 2012, 07:03:05 AM
Wow, that would be like a trippy rainbow explosion. Only if I made it, it would probably be lacking in ponies, but the colorful trippy world would be there.

I don't mind the original graphics, sometimes they can even make enemies feel more sinister or frightening. But it makes it hard to get mods that suit it, unless they are like this Megaman one.

How far do you think the mod will take to complete? You seem to be blazing through it as it is. Well the Ice Age part of it at least.

Post by: Nethellus on May 14, 2012, 08:44:17 PM
I have no idea how long this will take to complete, it may take a very long time, but I will probably release alpha versions one environment at a time I think. First would be ice age, second would be thawing plains/woods and third something else and so on.

Meanwhile, Gemini Man encounters an infernal contraption, laughs in the face of danger:

And what's that door thing? Is it a door? Or a cave?

It's the red slime in the tutorial. The fire things are its homing missiles. =)

Those are Illari crystal replacements? And the 2 together might be the difficulty and spell crafting stations, since those 2 often spawn on each other.
Title: Re: Megaman 8-bit Texture Pack (WIP)
Post by: Coppermantis on May 15, 2012, 11:42:37 PM
I would imagine that the Doctors are the stones. The green robot (Not sure what it's called) is probably the Opal Store and the pod is maybe the spell crafting bench,
Title: Re: Megaman 8-bit Texture Pack (WIP)
Post by: Nethellus on May 16, 2012, 12:04:30 AM
The pod is the place where you respawn and change the difficulty, and Dr. Light (white beard) is the hearth stone, Dr. Cossack (orange beard) is the adviser stone, and Auto (green robot) is the opal stone.

The Crafting bench is non-existent! Nuuuuuu!

How do you know that his beard isn't white, it is light. And how do you know his bead isn't orange, it is cossack.

Personally, I think this mod is really neat looking. I love the amount of time and care and effort put into it. I also think that because of copyright laws, it's not something we could ever officially put into the game.

But, then, that's the point of community mods, right? :)

Wow. This would make the game for me. Sadly the thread is a month old. :( What's the project status?
Title: Re: Megaman 8-bit Texture Pack (WIP)
Post by: Nethellus on June 22, 2012, 02:34:48 PM
Status is that I lost interest in this game and fell down the Minecraft hole again for a month, but now I've had enough of that, so maybe I'll continue with this.

But now that the devs seem to be looking to change the art style of the game to something more along the lines of this (they used this thread as an example), this texture pack might eventually not be much of an improvement. I am very interested in seeing what kind of style the new art will have, if it changes at all.

And if it changes, dimensions of sprites, particles, and numbers of frames in animations might change as well, which means that many things in this pack would have to be updated and changed and who knows what would have to be done.

So if the art is going to change, maybe I will wait for it to happen. I am unsure.

Unless all of the screenshots you posted are mock-ups, it seems like you got quite a bit done already, even if it's only for the Ice Age. Why not make this an open project and post what you have so far? I'm sure the community would love to continue the project. (I certainly would.) It just seems like such a great idea to let it go unfinished.
Title: Re: Megaman 8-bit Texture Pack (WIP)

The problem is that most of this will probably become unusable when or if the art style changes. There is no point in continuing until that is settled.
