And probably also Dwarf Fortress players
Tried DF but I just couldn't.  So no, not a DF player.

I know there is a high percentage of DF players here, hence only the "probably."
I definitely didn't mean everyone. ;)

Just confirming that I don't play it.  Not that I didn't try, it looks fascinating.  Needing to watch half a million tutorial videos just to get started is a pretty steep barrier to entry though.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Yeah, its pretty steep.
I haven't played heavily since before bees were added.
I played after bees were added once and promptly started half-to-death because I forgot the basics.

Yeah, that's generally how it goes.

Took me absolutely forever to finally learn it.   I sat through, what, 55 (actual number, not sarcasm) videos to learn it?  To learn the basics, that is.  Which didn't include Adventure mode.

Granted, once I got there, it was sooooooooo freaking worth it (as well it better be, after 55 bloody videos) but yes, it's more than a little daunting.

Though to be fair, AI War had nearly the same effect on me.  Except I couldn't find tutorials.

There were videos to explain it?

I think I got into it so easy because I played tons of Nethack and other text based dungeon crawlers growing up. However varied tiles was my bane for the longest time. I couldn't look at outside maps without going cross-eyed.

Yeah, a Youtuber by the name of CaptainDuck made a full series of video tutorials of the game; they were done in a continuous format, so you saw the fortress evolve (and or screw up) as he continued to introduce concepts.  I found it easy to watch since I watch a lot of LPs, and that was similar enough to those, just with a lot more explanations and goblin stabbing.   He ended up doing new tutorial sets later on after the game had major updates.

For me the game was just impenetrable before that.  And I say this as someone that has spent countless hours playing ASCII-graphics games of every possible type.

I think there's an option to reduce the visual "noise" so that all the grass uses the same character, etc.
You'll still have to deal with some variance, like the fact that different trees (oak, poplar, willow...) use different characters or the random junk characters off in the unknown underground areas, but you can absolutely make all the grass use the same glyph.

Yes, actually I believed that Toady One put that one in there because I started complaining. ;) At least I started the complain train.

I couldn't find a thread about this, and didn't think it warranted it's own, but after reading Keith's update last night is anyone else worried about the voices in his head and what they might be telling him to code into the game against us?  :D (That was an awesome presentation of AI logic in a fun entertaining way Keith!)

I do get the impression that in Keith's mind, playing at 10/10 is the canon version of events, and the AI always wins. :D

It's well written, and I like the sense of humor.
