Concerning The Dark Spire

I must say I'm a bit confused about the new minor faction.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to play it during its first iteration, so maybe I missed out on the way it was originally supposed to be.  But on the Dark Spire Generator, the description reads, "What happens when it reaches critical mass?"  So to test this theory, I did a full frontal assault on a ARS planet, then did an ARS hack on said planet, thinking FOR SURE I would reach critical mass, and the Universe would explode.

Well, unfortunately nothing of the sort happened, it just continued to produce a few small ships here and there that just kind of ran around attacking things at random, and not really doing much else.

Am I missing something here?  Is this all the Dark Spire does?  I mean if I haven't reached "critical mass" after killing over 1,000 ships on the same planet, something is terribly wrong.  Does critical mass simply refer to a small number of ships?

I'm confused  :-[

Previously it would cascade into an apocalyptic force real quick (from reading other folks comments).  It was toned back just a bit to not hit that point so soon ;)

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.
