Reinforcements and some questions
« on: August 14, 2009, 05:50:06 am »
Hello there,

i just defeated the first AI out of 2. (both AI 4). One thing that confuses me is the reinforcement message, its like 2x34, AI 1 Bombers.

The numbers shown never match with anything. I'm also having a good fight against the AI but the reinforcements are just laughtable, it sends like 10-20 Fighter/bomber when i have hundreds of ships/turrets there. (AI Progression 118). Are reinforcements the only way that the AI uses to attack?

One thing that i dont like that much is that i cant see if my lightning missile did some damage or not because the screen goes dark after the missile detonates...would be nice if the fog of war is still lifted for 2-3 seconds after the missile explodes...so you can see if you did any damage, so you know if its good to attack now. Will a lightning missile damage stuff under a forcefield? is one enought to destroy anything in its blast radius?.

And whats up with these worthless sniper towers? i had 80 of them placed down. 18 mk2 and about 10 mk1 bombers cruisers killed them all, every single sniper turret  ???

Cant believe that I'm playing such a simple looking game instead of Empire Total War, Anno 1404 and so on :D. I also tried a game vs AI 7 and i was like  :o :o :o. It was quite funny how well the AI used tactics against me, if both AIs from Empire Total War and AI War would have a fight, than the empire one would be crying all thetime and the AI War one just laughting around :P.

I only wish that the game would have a simple irc chat or anything...would be nice to chat with other players in the game. This would also be great to find people for the multiplayer. or a chat and message system over a server. Than you get messages like: "player xy just won/lost against Ai 7" or "Player xy captured Planet xy, he has now xy planets total" etc

Hi Darkreaver,

Well done on defeating the first AI!

The numbers are actually multipliers indicating the strength of the incoming waves. 2.34X means that the wave will be 2.34 times stronger than the base wave strength for your current level of AI progression. You might get lots of smaller waves or fewer larger waves. The waves will be much larger on the higher difficulties!

You can also be attacked by traveling AI ships routing between the AI's Special Forces Command Posts.

On the higher difficulties (5+) the AI will attack using much more deadly cross-planet attacks. These occur when the number of AI ships on a single planet becomes too great - in the region of 3000. The AI 'frees' up to about 1500 of these ships to launch an attack. Watch out for high tech AI planets becoming too powerful - the AI could launch a large number of tech IV ships at you. You'll receive an 'Attack forming at planet X' warning when one of these is about to occur.

One thing that i dont like that much is that i cant see if my lightning missile did some damage or not because the screen goes dark after the missile detonates...would be nice if the fog of war is still lifted for 2-3 seconds after the missile explodes...so you can see if you did any damage, so you know if its good to attack now.

This is by design. Be sure to position a scout in the system if you need to monitor the missile's effects.

Will a lightning missile damage stuff under a forcefield? is one enought to destroy anything in its blast radius?.

Lightning missiles are immune to forcefields (They can fly right through them) and the detonation will damage anything under the forcefield. They're enough to destroy most basic ships but you will need to use multiple missiles to destroy certain starships and structures. Some units simply have so much health that destroying them using Lightning Missiles is unfeasible. The AI's Core Command Station is an example of one such unit.

Glad to hear you're enjoying AI War. I've also been hugely impressed by the depth and skill of the AI - it's in constant development and will certainly become increasingly powerful. :)

Sniper turrets have infinite range, and can also fire through forcefields. True, they don't do as much damage as other types of turret, but they can hit enemy ships anywhere in the system. Try placing some Short Range and/or MLRS turrets by the Sniper Turrets to protect them.

I only wish that the game would have a simple irc chat or anything...would be nice to chat with other players in the game. You can access the AI War IRC Channel Here. It doesn't feature any of the messages you suggested, though it functions for the purposes of chatting with other players.

Are there plans for a serious manual BTW? I don't need it anymore, but it might be nice for others. The wiki doesn't quite cut it, and we get people here with RTS experience here asking fairly basic questions.

There are indeed plans for a manual.

I'm working on it as we speak, it's aimed for an early September release, though with X's permission I may post a draft version for player criticism before then.
