IMO 2D game with very good sprites and effects is _MUCH_ better that 3D.

I'm personally fan of roguelike games (ASCII only - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/Mayday-tileset.gif or title based - http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/kuvat/shot_wolf.png) so for me graphic is really don't important  :)

Yikes, no thanks - Actual moving planets would be a HUGE mess.

I would even go so far as to say that with the current CPU power, a realistic simulation of the solar system with all physics included (that means with inertia and mass drag/gravitational well calculation etc) is impossible in real time.

And without such a physics engine your ships wouldn't actually sit in orbit around a planet unless they are constantly moving in the same direction as the planet. There was a game that did this once.. was horrid to play. And your ships would have problems catching up with your own planets or moons. Was hilarious but not in a good way.

Homeworld 2 is the limit of what can be done in rts space games in terms of 3d dimensionality - anything more than that will be utter chaos or completely unplayable.

But seriously x4000 i am shocked!, .. Homeworld 2 is one of THE best space rts games ever made. Especially given the mods (complex 7.4 for one) And the camera in hw2 is highly intuitive imo ;p

The only Space RTS better than HW2 was Nexus - Which is the best space battle simulation there is.

Actually, I never played Homeworld2.  After Homeworld 1 (which I did buy, and played some) I just gave it a miss.  I was busy with some other terrestrial-focused RTS at the time, anyway -- there's too much to play everything!

What, does that mean you have never played Nexus: The Jupiter Incident either? ;p

After having played both (hw2 and nexus) i actually have to cringe how much genre has reverted to nothingness again. Nexus is probably the only actually decent fleet tactical sim ever made. And Homeworld 2 is the only Strategic "building stuff" Tactical Fleet Sim i know of.

No other game ever even approached the gameplay of Nexus or Homeworld 2 again.. that entire space battle sim genre is death.. gah ;(

There are only 2 good fleet engagement sims on the market HW2 and Nexus. Nothing else ;( Hardly too much to play.. more like "genre has been dead for nearly 4 years now"

Just look what could have been

You know, every time i play this trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhZQEvg1V0Y&feature=related i get goosebumps

3 years ago, this game could have been made, it would have been the status quo of all space battle sims.
It died, with it the entire genre.

Man i still can't believe how this is possible... that tech demo is more advanced in gameplay and graphics than any other game on the market today... ... the world is unfair...

Gah, now i want to play Nexus again.. curses!

Wow, that's impressive.  Yes, that does mean I've never played Nexus.

I wasn't refering to space sims when I said there was too much, I was referring to RTS.  Perhaps this is odd for the creator of a space RTS game to say, but I've just never been too into space sims before.  I used to really like Star Control and such back in the day, and I really liked Tyrian (parts of which were in space), plus a handful of other games (and a lot of action games, like Descent/Descent:Freespace and the Star Wars games), but otherwise I've tended to gravitate more to the earthbound stuff.  I guess it isn't really a strong preference one way or another, I play the games that grab me.  Part of the reason why I put AI War in space was that I was getting a little tired of all the land/sea/air RTS games, and I had always wanted a space-based RTS but never found one that matched the sort of feel that I wanted.  Hence, AI War filled a personal niche for me that nothing else I had tried had filled.

Yeah.. rts is sadly a too broad term for a genre that involves tactics mainly, only very few games (ai war being one of them, and aside that, Total War) actually involve strategic decisions.

Well Ai war fills my RTS in space taste pretty well ;P But for my fleet engagement sim taste i am hungered for new material.. Homeworld 2 is too short (i mean its not epic like Nexus ,p), and Nexus is too.. well Nexus is actually fine ... just that knowing what could have been is not always good.

I just don't get why Nexus or Homeworld 2 never got a sequel. And while we are at games i want to have a sequel for, Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonauts !

There are so many games deserving of sequels that never arrived.  But there's always hope for the future!  Some of these titles get direct or spiritual sequels a decade or more later.  I guess it's all a matter of timing.

I just feel like there are too few 2D games out there, and that's a dearth I aim to fill.
...
So that's the space I really want to stay in, it's just where I have always been most interested.

That's okay. If I ever sell my business and go into early retirement, I'll call you to ask to join the Arcen team as a developer who puts out a 3D AI War with all my spare time. :)

I wish Mr. I Still Can't Pronounce His Handle had a gaming blog or a gaming magazine or something. I'd be a subscriber! I keep getting new games to look up to figure out if I want to add them to my "must someday play" list.

Impulse is doing their Weekend Impulse Buy on The Witcher at http://www.impulsedriven.com/twee, which at $28 is nearly half off the original price. I read some interesting, good things about it.

AI War was once an Impulse Buy too! I was in Iceland at the time, alas...

It's available on Steam. My opinion on Steam is... I avoid it at all cost. It's available at a greater price on Amazon marketplace.

I wonder how it would run on Vista 64-bit on a 2560x1600 screen.

Cheers!

Yeah, I've been tempted by that one, too.  I've got enough going on that I'm not really ready to pull the trigger on that just from time considerations, but it looks cool.

Yeah, that was a really successful event for us.  We were the #7 selling game on Impulse for a while after that, and then our numbers have still been elevated with them ever since.  You never know what the future might hold... ;)

UGH!

I still wish I could reply to News forum articles. Are you sure there isn't a way you can tell the forum to sort by original post date? Then you could have your cake (ordered by news date in the list) and I could eat it too (reply). :(

Congrats to Rev!
