Horribly annoying looping sound bug.
« on: August 18, 2009, 07:39:33 PM »
Ok. I'll list what happened in chronological order. :]

I patched to 1.014J. Loaded, get attacked by a 588 parasite wave right away. Easily destroy it. Then, I get this lovely horrible looping sound. It won't go away, it's EVERYWHERE. Galaxy view, planet view, didn't matter. Didn't even matter what planet.

I checked the sound files, and it's definitely was "wormhole.ogg".

Also, a save file, in case it's useful, although after I saved and reloaded the sound went away.

I can't duplicate this, and have never seen it.  It seems like someone else mentioned this happening once out of the blue, with a different sound effect, but that was a super rare thing.  There is almost definitely no way the game code can directly cause this, because it basically just says "play this asynchronously once" to DirectSound and then moves on.  It wouldn't keep playing it unless the trigger was still being fired, which wouldn't result in exactly the same behavior anyway.

So my point is that this is some sort of looping glitch on the DirectSound thread running this sound effect, unfortunately.  Hopefully that will not happen again, but I'm not sure if there's anything I can do about it since it's basically outside the control level of my actual application. :(

You might want to check your audio drivers if this happens regularly. Open up the Hardware Manager and navigate to your sound card/audio device and uninstall/reinstall the drivers. If you have a sound card, try updating the drivers with the newest ones from the manufacturer's website. If it keeps happening, you should also try lowering your audio quality settings in the Control Panel or in game, though I'm not sure AI War has any audio quality/channel settings you can set directly.
