DirectX Problems
« on: September 26, 2009, 09:14:49 pm »
I've been trying to setup AI War, but it won't initilize DirectX.  It then throws the same errors that I read about in this post:

http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,923.0.html

However, I'm not trying to load on a Linux.  Just straight windows.  Another computer I'm trying loads the Directx, but throws the same errors.  Any ideas?  Thanks
Eric

Hi ehendricks,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties, it sounds as though DirectX may not be installed properly on your machine. Have you tried downloading and installing the latest version of DirectX separately?

Additionally, installing the latest drivers for your graphics card is recommended if you haven't done so already.

Can I ask which version of the game installer you're using, and where you downloaded it from? Did you receive any error messages whilst installing the game?

Hope this helps. If the game still fails to launch, could you please post the UnhandledErrors.txt file that will be found in your AI War directory?

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Regards,
Revenantus

I downloaded DirectX 9 manually, and I should have the updated graphics drivers.  I'll double check to be sure.

I'll attach the log file for you.  I've tried installing from several places on the net, plus the copy that was sent when we purchased a key.

Thanks bunch for your help.

The "Unable to initialize DirectX' error message is often related to an outdated/corrupt installation of DirectX. Could you try removing DirectX from your system completely, and reinstalling from scratch using the package linked above?

Were there any issues at all during installation of the game? On some machines the .NET framework takes a long time to install and seems to hang, if this is the case for you and you suspect that it may not have installed properly, you could try downloading the full .NET Installer from Microsoft. Scroll down on that page until you see a link called ".NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package)". Unfortunately, it's quite a large download.

While I think this is unlikely to be a solution, you can try the Latest Prerelease version of the game. To update your game to the latest prerelease version, extract the zip archive on the linked page into your AI War directory.

As suggested by liq3, there have been reports that AI War does not interact well with software such as mumble, have you tried quitting all other running programs to see if any of them are interfering with the game?

Thank you for attaching your error log. Could you please tell me which version of Windows you're running, and which graphics card you have installed?

I'll continue to assist you as well as I can, though if we're unable to find a resolution at this stage I assure you that the developer will be available to address this issue no later than Monday.

I've tried the top to bottom DirectX download, no luck.  I'm working on the .Net reinstall now, so we'll see how that goes.  The Prerelease didn't work either.

I'm running Xp with a ATI Radeon XPress 200M.

Thanks so much for your help, guys.  I heard some real great things bout the game, and I've been itching to give her a run.

How do other 3D games run?
sounds almost as if AI War is using a graphic feature unsupported by your videocard (although I find it very unlikely)

Sorry about your troubles, ehendricks. To be honest, I don't think Revenantus or I will be able to troubleshoot this one, since the things already suggested haven't worked. x4000 (Chris), the person behind this game, is currently out of town, but as Revenantus pointed out, he'll be back and ready to help by Monday.

If either of us come up with any more ideas before then, we'll be sure to post. I apologize for the wait!

"ATI Radeon XPress 200M. "

Sounds like some really really terrible mobile integrated card. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't support DirectX at all.

After a quick google, it appears your card should fully support DirectX 9.0. No idea really.

The comp is a fairly standard Toshiba laptop ( I know, for the most part, they're junk).  I've checked all the specs, it covers all of the necessary requirements....

Success!!!  Turns out the problem was with a video driver I was using.  I reinstalled Windows on this machine a month or two ago, and it's been using a generic video driver, so it didn't support DirectX.  I had it, it just wouldn't run it.  Once I went to Toshiba and got the new driver, looks like I'm up and running.  dxDiag finally narrowed it down.

Thanks for all your help guys!  I'm off to give the game a run!
