Epic Finale
« on: May 14, 2010, 02:58:08 am »
The epic game has come to an end.  After nearly 82 in-game hours, the game I started with my brother back in June of 2009 has finally been won. It's taken nearly a year, playing at least 6-8 hours per week to get there, and much of that time was spent on hardware that could barely run the game. The end result was playing a game at an eighth of its normal speed. Even with our new systems, it was still rather slow for the larger battles, but come the very end, it ran smooth as glass!  ;D

A picture says a thousand words.

Though I do wonder how the AI didn't build as many ships as it lost, or why the exo-galaxy wormholes stuck around after all was said and done.

Wow!

I've been aware of this game since maybe last August or so, and for various bug reports you've sent me different saves of it over the time, which has been neat, too -- a couple of them I use for test cases pretty regularly.  This was a full 100 planets that you took over, right?  Pretty incredible!

Are the two of you planning on starting a new campaign (shorter, perhaps?), or are you going to take a well-earned break? ;)

Regarding the exo-galaxy wormholes, those do stick around forever, they aren't mean to ever die.  But I guess you got the AIs down to two units in the galaxy, then?  I think that would be a first for anyone, at least on any sizable map (and certainly anything remotely like 100 planets).

Great stuff, and congrats on the win!  ;D

Yup. 100 planets of 100 planets.

We have Crysis and Oblivion to play, so we're going with the former (since it's shorter) before starting the next epic game. We will, eventually, start a new (very likely shorter; 50 planets, probably) campaign. We'll see what happens with difficulty level 6.

I didn't post a save.  :P

Difficulty 5, one tank, one turtle.

The tank had whittled its forces down by the time I got to its homeworld, so I only had to chew through about 3000 units. The turtle, on the other hand, had a sizable force remaining that required a large number of lightning warheads.  ;D

I look forward to seeing what happens with this conquer all playstyle on higher difficulties.

Difficulty 5 was "normal" back when we started that campaign.  :D

 Hi!

First, good job on the win!

For the avenger, maybe it should scale with number of players/homeworlds and ai progress? I can see that with  larger ship cap or lots or planets between it and the player homeworld it could be a lot less challenging.

For the ai10 difficulty, are you using the beta or official? My last ai10 game was on the official, my current one on the beta has waves being something like 3 times as large.

Also, if you took pictures at key points post them, they're fun to look at! Or strategies to overcome specific harsh scenarios you feel like sharing?

Sorry - i forgot to post the version being used. I wanted to edit the post yesterday  :Pbut then Found out that my pc couldnt Auto-detect my Game drive anymore. Looks like i paid the ultimate Price ;)

I Started the Game with 3.120 and constantly upgraded my version. Due to my huge Ship size i had to because i always got Memory Problems Beyond 250k Units. So i ended the Game with 3.172. The Most annoying Upgrade was When the hp of ai Command stations was increased to the Level of human Command stations. This happened around conquered Planet Number 50. From then on i had to Change my strategy radically.

If you are planning to play on a snake level be aware that logistic wise its a frikking nightmare  :P

Two Things are memorable.

First Things was when i cleared 20 Enemy Planets and wanted to Move my Base forward. With Version 3.120 the ships sometimes accumulated for whatever reason on a Warp Point and waited there - but only if you didn't load the Game. So i saw such a Ship Ball and Moved my builders to the Front and began to build like hell. Guess what - the Game crashed while i was in the Middle of my Warp Point fortification. I think i had like 20 half built Electro turrets. When i loaded the last Auto Save i was rushed by the 20k ships waiting 2 Systems Away (but i survived it by using bait colony ships).

The Second Thing was when i Found the dysom sphere at planet 110 in my chain. 12k Enemy ships just sitting there and doing nothing.(i already Reported this Strange behaviour As a Bug) Anyway when i finally had consolidated my Position to push further already 22k of Mark v and iv were waiting - and they all were attacking everything which showed up on their System. But with the use of cloaked builders, fortresses acting As bait, a Radar Jammer mark ii and the excessive use of Lightning Torpedos this Situation was brought under Control.

Now i can only Hope that my Hardware seller can fix my harddrive  8)
